  • Evidence-Based Therapist-Supported Digital Mental Health Intervention for Patients Experiencing Medical Multimorbidity

    Benjamin W Nelson, Nicholas C Peiper et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2024

OBJECTIVE: Multimorbidity or the co-occurrence of multiple health conditions is increasing globally and is associated with significant psychological complications. It is unclear whether digital mental health (DMH) interventions for patients experiencing multimorbidity are effective, particularly given that this patient population faces more treatment resistance. The goal of the current study was to examine the impact of smartphone-delivered DMH i…

  • Digital mental health interventions as stand-alone vs. augmented treatment as usual

    Open Access•Benjamin W Nelson, Nicholas C Peiper et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Patients with higher depressive and anxiety symptoms tend to self-select into using DMHI in addition to more traditional types of treatment, rather than as a stand-alone intervention, and have more severe clinical characteristics. The use the MHP alone was associated with improvement at a similar rate to those with higher baseline symptoms who are in traditional treatments and use MHP adjunctively

  • Longitudinal Patterns of Engagement and Clinical Outcomes

Kirstin Aschbacher, Luisa M Rivera et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2023

OBJECTIVE: Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) are an effective treatment modality for common mental disorders like depression and anxiety; however, the role of intervention engagement as a longitudinal "dosing" factor is poorly understood in relation to clinical outcomes. METHODS: We studied 4978 participants in a 12-week therapist-supported DMHI (June 2020-December 2021), applying a longitudinal agglomerative hierarchical cluster analys…

  • Changes in Quality of Life and Loneliness Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults Participating in Therapist-Guided Digital Mental Health Intervention

Open Access•Christine E Gould, Chalise Carlson et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Background: This study aimed to examine the effects of a 12-week multicomponent mobile app-delivered intervention, the Meru Health Program (MHP), on mental health quality of life (QoL) and loneliness among the middle-aged and older adults with depression symptoms. Methods: The eligible participants ( M age = 57.06, SD = 11.26 years) were enrolled in the MHP, a therapist-supported mobile intervention. Using a non-randomized pre-post design, change…

  • Correlates of exposure to potentially traumatic experiences

    Open Access•Valerie L Forman‐Hoffman, Valerie Forman-Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2018

These findings from a nationally representative study of civilian adults living in U.S. households suggest that PTE exposure may have significant public health implications beyond those associated with the development of posttraumatic stress disorder. • Disability Status, Mortality, and Leading Causes of Death in the United States Community Population

    Valerie L Forman‐Hoffman, Valerie L Forman-Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2015•References: 25

OBJECTIVE: We examined the effect of functional disability on all-cause mortality and cause-specific deaths among community-dwelling US adults. METHODS: We used data from 142,636 adults who participated in the 1994-1995 National Health Interview Survey-Disability Supplement eligible for linkage to National Death Index records from 1994 to 2006 to estimate the effects of disability on mortality and leading causes of death. RESULTS: Adults with any…

  • Impact of Functional Limitations and Medical Comorbidity on Subsequent Weight Changes and Increased Depressive Symptoms in Older Adults

    Open Access•Valerie L Forman‐Hoffman, Valerie L Forman-Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The elevated risk of weight gain subsequent to functional decline or onset of medical comorbidities may require the receipt of preventive measures to reduce further weight-related complications

  • Retirement and Weight Changes Among Men and Women in the Health and Retirement Study

    Valerie L Forman‐Hoffman, V L Forman-Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2008•Cited by: 6•References: 3

Public health interventions may be indicated for women, particularly those working in blue-collar occupations, in order to prevent weight gain upon retirement

  • Weight and Depressive Symptoms in Older Adults

    Valerie L Forman‐Hoffman, V L Forman-Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Weight gain did not lead to increased depressive symptoms, and weight loss preceded increased depressive symptoms only in unadjusted models among men (odds ratio [OR] = 1.26, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.04-1.53). Increased depressive symptoms were not predictive of subsequent weight loss, but they were predictive of subsequent weight gain in unadjusted models only (men: OR = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.00-1.54; women: OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.00-1.26). • Associations between medical service use and HIV risk among HIV-positive drug users in Baltimore, MD

    Carl Latkin, C A Latkin et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2004

The objectives of this study were first, to identify psychosocial and medical service utilization factors associated with unprotected sex with HIV-negative or unknown serostatus partners among persons living with HIV/AIDS, and second, to identify risk behaviours associated with HIV medical service use. We assessed 244 HIV-positive participants in an HIV intervention targeting drug users (1997-99). Fifty-seven per cent of HIV-positive participants…
