Community-Led Transformation in Practice
Community-academic partnerships are increasingly recognized as essential for advancing equitable public health outcomes. Yet many partnerships struggle to move beyond short-term, project-based collaboration toward sustained, trust-based engagement with communities. This commentary draws on the experience of the University of California San Diego Center for Community Health (CCH) and its long-standing partnerships with immigrant, refugee, and othe…
Statewide implementation for medications for opioid use disorder (Moud) in urban and rural emergency departments
BACKGROUND: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) programs in Emergency Departments (EDs) are feasible and effective, but uptake lags despite rising overdose deaths. NM Bridge partners with hospitals across highly rural New Mexico to guide implementation for ED-based MOUD using a Dissemination & Implementation (D&I) approach. This manuscript describes NM Bridge's outcomes in its first three years (2020-2023). METHODS: NM Bridge offers partne…

Characterizing Self-Reports of Self-Identified Patient Experiences with Methadone Maintenance Treatment on an Online Community during Covid-19
Patients described unanticipated consequences to one-size-fits-all policies that are unevenly applied resulting in suboptimal dosing, increased perceived risk of acquiring COVID-19 at OTPs, and reduced interaction with OTP providers and staff. While preliminary, these results are formative for follow-up surveillance metrics for patients of OTPs as well as digitally-mediated resource needs for this online community. This study serves as a model of…
Association of Depression and Anxiety With the 10-Year Risk of Cardiovascular Mortality in a Primary Care Population of Latvia Using the SCORE System
Background: Depression and anxiety have been recognized as independent risk factors for both the development and prognosis of cardiovascular (CV) diseases (CVD). The Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) function measures the 10-year risk of a fatal CVD and is a crucial tool for guiding CV patient management. This study is the first in Latvia to investigate the association of depression and anxiety with the 10-year CV mortality risk in a pr…
Association of depression and anxiety with cardiovascular co-morbidity in a primary care population in Latvia
Current depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 ≥ 10) and a lifetime depressive episode (according to the MINI) were significantly associated with increased risk of CV morbidity. Therefore, CV patients should be screened and treated for depression to potentially improve the prognosis of CVDs. Enhanced training and integration of mental health treatment in Latvian primary care settings may improve clinical outcomes
Barriers and Facilitators to Deaf Trauma Survivors’ Help-Seeking Behavior
Deaf individuals experience significant obstacles to participating in behavioral health research when careful consideration is not given to accessibility during the design of study methodology. To inform such considerations, we conducted an exploratory secondary analysis of a mixed-methods study that originally explored 16 Deaf trauma survivors' help-seeking experiences. Our objective was to identify key findings and qualitative themes from consu…
Deaf people’s help-seeking following trauma
Deaf-friendly trauma treatment should incorporate the components of trauma-informed care but also carefully consider key criteria expressed by our participants: direct signed communication, understanding of Deaf history and experience, stringent practices to protect confidentiality, provider visibility in the community, and reliance on peer support and Deaf role models in treatment interventions. Smoking Cessation and Electronic Cigarettes in Community Mental Health Centers
A Culturally Adapted Smoking Cessation Intervention for Korean Americans
Smoking Topography in Korean American and White Men
The New York Policy on Smoking in Addiction Treatment
Objectives. We assessed changes in smoking prevalence and other measures associated with the July 2008 New York Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services tobacco policy, which required that all publicly funded addiction treatment programs implement smoke-free grounds, have “no evidence” of smoking among staff, and make tobacco dependence treatment available for all clients. Methods. In a random sample of 10 programs, staff and clients wer…
Tobacco Dependence Treatment for Korean Americans
A Brief Treatment Engagement Intervention for Individuals with Co-occurring Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders
Tobacco use and cessation in psychiatric disorders
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) convened a meeting in September 2005 to review tobacco use and dependence and smoking cessation among those with mental disorders, especially individuals with anxiety disorders, depression, or schizophrenia. Smoking rates are exceptionally high among these individuals and contribute to the high rates of medical morbidity and mortality in these individuals. Numerous biological, psychological, and soci…
Addressing Tobacco Use Through Organizational Change
Compared to the general population, persons entering addiction treatment are three to four times more likely to be tobacco dependent and even addiction treatment staff members are two to three times more likely to be tobacco dependent. In these settings, tobacco use continues to be the norm; however addiction treatment programs are increasingly aware of the need to assess for and treat tobacco dependence. The problem is a cultural issue that is s…
Using Information Technology to Evaluate the Detection of Co-Occurring Substance Use Disorders Amongst Patients in a State Mental Health System
Detection of Co-Occurring Mental Illness Among Adult Patients in the New Jersey Substance Abuse Treatment System
Objectives. We assessed the detection of mental illness in an adult population of substance abuse patients and the rate of referral for mental health treatment. Methods. We obtained combined administrative records from 1994 to 1997 provided by the New Jersey substance abuse and mental health systems and estimated detection and referral rates of patients with co-occurring disorders (n = 47 379). Mental illness was considered detected if a diagnosi…
Pharmacotherapy Improves Treatment Outcome in Depressed Cocaine Addicts
Depression is the most common psychiatric disorder in substance abusers, and results in a poorer prognosis and response to traditional chemical dependence and mental health treatment approaches. This article focuses on the use of pharmacotherapy in the treatment of the cocaine addict with secondary depression and provides general clinical treatment guidelines. It also reports on a study in which depressed, methadone-maintained cocaine addicts wer…
