  • A stringent test of the influence of attitudes on text memory

    Susan T Zimny, Donald U Robertson•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•1997•References: 31

Three experiments explored the effects of preexisting attitudes on memory for texts using Kintsch's (1988) Construction Integration model as a framework for the investigation. Attitude instances were presented in the microstructure of texts to separate attitude and topic effects, making a stringent test of attitude effects. Preexisting attitudes were shown to interact with attitude texts over delay although not in a direct or expected fashion. Th…

  • Disenfranchised grief and evaluations of social support by college students

    Gordon F Thornton, Gordon Thornton et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Disenfranchised grief occurs in socially unrecognized or socially unsanctioned relationships. To assess the reactions of college students to someone grieving a disenfranchised loss,96 undergraduate students read one of six scenarios describing a grieving person. Three scenarios involved disenfranchised losses, and three were recognized losses. Subjects evaluated the griever's interpersonal and social role functioning and available social support.…

  • Expectations about grief and evaluation of the griever

Nancy Kubitz, Gordon F Thornton et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•1989•Cited by: 2

This study assessed the impact of subjects' expectations about grief on their evaluation of the interpersonal attractiveness of a griever. Female (91) and male (SI) undergraduates read a description of a college student grieving over the death of a friend who had died 3 months previously. The descriptions varied on the basis of the sex of the griever, type of death (sudden versus anticipated), and intensity of grief symptoms (high versus low). Af…

  • Evaluation of people bereaved by suicide

Gordon F Thornton, Gordon Thornton et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•1989•Cited by: 3

Friends and acquaintances of people bereaved by a suicide in the family tend not to offer effective support. Societal attitudes to suicide and related perceptions (often "misperceptions") of bereaved family members suggest that friends will not "be there" to the same degree and in the same ways that they would following other sorts of deaths. Thus counselors of those bereaved by suicide deaths must, in their support activities, make allowances

  • The Factorial Validity of the Family Environment Scale

    Open Access•Donald U Robertson, Janet Shibley Hyde•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1982

The present study attempted to determine whether the 10 subscales of the Family Environment Scale do measure 10 dimensions (factors) of the family environment. In a factor analysis of data from high school freshmen and sophomores (n = 344), the 10 subscales did not emerge as 10 factors. Hence, seven new sub-scales were proposed: Conflict, Group Cohesion, Structure, Religion, Activities, Verbal-Intellectual Orientation, and Protestant Ethic. The r…

    Open Access•Donald U Robertson, Roger E G Mesmer et al.•ARTICLE•Community Mental Health Journal•1982•References: 18
