Turning to Service Users for the Understanding of Current and Future Mental Health Services in the Development Process of Research and Practice
BACKGROUND: A person-centred and recovery-oriented approach is an integral part of modern mental health services founded on the experiential knowledge of service users. Their reflections as experts, grounded in their unique experience as service users, play a significant role in developing and improving the existing care. Experiential knowledge is therefore a means to enhance the relevance of research, inform the development of care, and bridge r…

Cross-Cultural Insights from Two Global Mental Health Studies
This commentary highlights two cross-cultural issues identified from our global mental health (GMH) research, RECOLLECT (Recovery Colleges Characterisation and Testing) 2: self-enhancement and ingroup biases. Self-enhancement is a tendency to maintain and express unrealistically positive self-views. Ingroup biases are differences in one’s evaluation of others belonging to the same social group. These biases are discussed in the context of GMH res…

Implementation of the Recovery Guide in inpatient mental health services in Sweden—A process evaluation study
BACKGROUND: Involving service users in inpatient care and recovery planning has gained interest worldwide. Our purpose was to evaluate the process of implementation of a coproduced Recovery Guide (RG) intervention in 22 inpatient wards in Sweden, in terms of context, implementation process and mechanisms of impact over 12 months. METHODS: A mixed method design and a process evaluation framework were used to guide data collection and to deductivel…
Implementation structures at work. Exploring implementation and de‐implementation attempts regarding Housing First and Individual Placement and Support
Research shows that resistance to change might occur in organisations that implement new evidence‐based practices (EBP). Formal and informal structures may work to retain traditional interventions, potentially counteracting the implementation process. Little is known about the de‐implementation of traditional practices to leave room for and enhance the implementation of EBPs. This study uses implementation structures as a theoretical framework wi…
Implementation of individual placement and support in a first‐episode psychosis unit
The aim of this study is to explore the IPS implementation process in a first‐episode psychosis (FEP) mental health service team in Sweden. More specifically, the study explores how integration processes and critical situations are perceived over time by team members who originated from two diverse welfare organizations. A serial interview design was used (initially, at 6 and 12 months) to describe experiences of 16 team members. Material was ana…

Policy Changes in Community Mental Health
The deinstitutionalization of mental health care has changed the responsibilities of involved authorities and has led to a continuous need for new treatment forms and interventions. This article describes this development in Europe, and in particular how these new conditions have been handled in Sweden over the past 20 years at the level of governmental policy‐making. Three major policy documents from 1994, 2009 and 2012 were included in this stu…
