  • The Apocalyptic Aesthetics of the List

William Rhodes•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval and Early…•2022

Lists can suggest both a complete written account and the open-ended accumulation of terms. In this, their frequent appearance in apocalyptic texts formally mirrors apocalypticism's combination of divinely created order and the chaotic description of catastrophic events. Medieval and early modern poetic prophecies often list local manifestations of disorder and exclude the cosmic frame of divine order, making poems like Wynnere and Wastoure, whic…

  • Relationship Between Prison Length of Stay and Recidivism

    Open Access•William Rhodes, Gerald G Gaes et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology & Public Policy•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 17

Research Summary In this study, we use both a regression discontinuity design and an instrumental variable identification strategy to examine the relationship between prison length of stay and recidivism among a large sample of federal offenders. We capitalize on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines structure to apply these strong inference, quasi‐experimental approaches. We find that average length of stay can be reduced by 7.5 months with a small imp…

  • Potentially Avoidable Hospitalizations for Elderly Long-stay Residents in Nursing Homes

    William D Spector, Rhona Limcangco et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2013•References: 14

BACKGROUND: Hospitalizations of long-stay nursing home (NH) residents are common. The high estimates of potentially avoidable hospitalizations in NHs suggest that efforts to reduce avoidable hospitalizations may be effective in lowering health care expenditures as well as improving the quality of care for NH residents. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between clinical risk factors, facility characteristics and State policy variables, and …

  • Hammett Et Al. Respond

Theodore M Hammett, Mary Patricia Harmon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2003•References: 1

Hirshon and Wilson raise important questions about the statistical methodology underlying part of our approach to estimating the burden of infectious disease among inmates and releasees. Our approach involved estimating the number of unique individuals who entered jails during a given year. Given the rapid turnover of jail populations, we assumed that the number of entrants would be roughly equivalent to the number of releasees. Although the tota…
