Engaging and Supporting Young Children and their Families in Early Childhood Mental Health Services
This study explores the role of family partners, peer professionals with lived experiences of raising a child with behavioral health needs, and their value in primary and community-care based mental health services for young children aged 0-8 years. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with staff, leadership, and caregiver participants (n = 38) from two early childhood mental health programs and analyzed using thematic analysis. Five interd…
A typology of models for expanding access to oral health care for people living with HIV/Aids
This typology can assist program planners, medical and dental care providers with service delivery strategies for addressing the unmet need for oral health care in their area
Factors associated with preventive dental care‐seeking behavior among people living with HIV
Many HIV-positive adults may seek preventive care when it is offered at no cost. Interventions that address unmet needs and target individuals who are not taking HIV medications or have poorer oral health may improve preventive practices
A Managed Care Model for Latino Adults With Chronic Illness and Disability
The authors evaluated a managed care model developed for use by community-based providers to improve health care outcomes for low-income Latinos with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Through this model, Medicaid enrollees with special health care needs were identified and received enhanced primary care, on-site mental health and addiction services, care coordination, and support services based on their levels of need. The goal of the demonstra…
Cross-Disability Experiences of Barriers to Health-Care Access
In this article, we present the results of a series of focus groups with people with disabilities, in which we took a cross-disability, lifespan perspective of disability. Consumers were asked about a broad set of barriers, such as problems with communication, transportation, and insurance, as well as about barriers related to physical accessibility. We used the Institute of Medicine's framework to categorize barriers as either structural, financ…
Provider Perceptions of Their Capacity to Offer Accessible Health Care for People With Disabilities
The purpose of this article is to provide preliminary data about the results of a comprehensive survey of providers regarding their perceptions of access to health care for people with a broad range of disabilities. We conducted a mail and telephone follow-up survey of providers that contract with two managed care organizations, the Massachusetts Division of Medical Assistance, and the Assisted Living Association (36% response rate). Data were an…
Health Services Utilization for People with HIV Infection
BACKGROUND: Many persons with HIV infection do not receive consistent ambulatory medical care and are excluded from studies of patients in medical care. However, these hard-to-reach groups are important to study because they may be in greatest need of services. OBJECTIVE: This study compared the sociodemographic, clinical, and health care utilization characteristics of a multisite sample of HIV-positive persons who were hard to reach with a natio…
Medication adherence for HIV positive women caring for children
Few studies have directly focused on adherence to highly active antiretroviral medication (HAART) in HIV positive women caring for children. These women may have unique barriers and facilitators to taking medication, and a deeper understanding of their adherence patterns could enhance intervention strategies. A total of 36 HIV positive women who care for children less than 18 years of age were interviewed regarding their patterns and decision aro…
Substance Abuse Treatment Services for People with Disabilities
The authors present results from an exploratory study conducted to learn more about how Medicaid managed-care plans meet the needs for substance abuse treatment among people with disabilities. These results suggest that capitated health plan staff members are more likely to be knowledgeable about the special needs of people with disabilities who also experience substance abuse problems. Staff members of smaller and more focused health plans demon…
