Beginning teacher candidates’ approaches to grading and assessment conceptions—implications for teacher education in assessment
Conceptions of classroom assessment and approaches to grading: Teachers’ and Students’ Perspectives
Classroom assessment and grading play central roles in education, with important impacts on teachers and students. This study examined the interactions between Canadian teachers’ and students’ conceptions of assessment and approaches to grading. 219 teachers and students completed a survey with two scales: Teachers’ Conceptions of Assessment (TCOA) and Teachers’ Approaches to Grading (TAG). Factor analysis of the TCOA scale showed four factors: a…
Exploring Formative Assessment and Co-Regulation in Kindergarten Through Interviews and Direct Observation
Formative assessment practices have been theoretically connected to the development of self-regulation with mounting empirical evidence. Co-regulation is the process whereby a more capable individual (e.g., teacher or peer) attunes the behaviours, emotions, or cognitive processes of an individual (a student) to align with goals or expectations and is being recognized as a strategy for developing self-regulation. Formative assessment practices may…

Identifying English Language Use and Communication Challenges Facing “Entry-Level” Workplace Immigrants in Canada
Canada has one of the world’s largest immigrant populations, with one in five people in Canada born outside the country. Among these immigrants, a great majority started their lives in Canada working in entry-level jobs. This study examined the English language use and communication challenges among these new Canadian immigrants in entry-level workplace settings. Fourteen participants were interviewed. The results showed four distinct patterns of…
Understanding and assessing uncertainty of observational climate datasets for model evaluation using ensembles
In climate science, observational gridded climate datasets that are based on in situ measurements serve as evidence for scientific claims and they are used to both calibrate and evaluate models. However, datasets only represent selected aspects of the real world, so when they are used for a specific purpose they can be a source of uncertainty. Here, we present a framework for understanding this uncertainty of observational datasets which distingu…

C Measurements of Dissolved Inorganic and Organic Carbon in Qinghai Lake and Inflowing Rivers (NE Tibet, Qinghai Plateau), China
There have been a number of studies that have attempted to estimate the past radiocarbon reservoir effects in Qinghai Lake, China. This article reports on measurements on modern samples collected at the lake in October 2003 and October 2009, which allow us to better understand the systematics of the lake and shed new insights on the processes occurring in the lake. The results indicate that atmospheric exchange of 14 C is the main process affecti…

Test review: College English Test (CET) in China
The key to success: English language testing in China
The testing and examination history in China can be traced back to the imperial period nearly two thousand years ago. The existence of English language testing (tests), on the other hand, has a much shorter history. These English tests, developed and administered over the past 20 years, however, are taken by billions of learners of the English language in China. To many of these learners, doing well on these tests are the key to their academic su…
The challenges of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test for second language students
Results from the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) indicate that English as a Second Language (ESL) and English Literacy Development (ELD) students have comparatively low success and high deferral rates. This study examined the 2002 and 2003 OSSLT test performances of ESL/ELD and non-ESL/ELD students in order to identify and understand the factors that may help explain why ESL/ELD students failed the test at relatively high rates. Th…
Teaching in elementary school: Perceptions of foreign-trained teacher candidates on their teaching practicum
ESL/EFL instructors’ classroom assessment practices: Purposes, methods, and procedures
Student assessment plays a central and important role in teaching and learning. Teachers devote a large part of their preparation time to creating instruments and observation procedures, marking, recording, and synthesizing results in informal and formal reports in their daily teaching. A number of studies of the assessment practices used by teachers in regular school classrooms have been undertaken (e.g., Rogers, 1991; Wilson, 1998; 2000). In co…

Free, Indentured, Enslaved: Chinese Prostitutes in Nineteenth- Century America
In societies undergoing rapid industrialization, prostitution serves a double economic function. It helps to maintain the labor force of single young men, which is in the interest of the capitalists who would otherwise have to pay higher wages to laborers with families to support. In addition, prostitution enables entrepreneurs to extract large profits from the work of women under their control and thus accumulate con
