Ethnic Differences in Weight Category Transition and Body Mass Index Trajectories from Adolescence to Young Adulthood in Israel
Many adolescents, even if not obese, have increasing BMI trajectories at ages 17-19 and move to a higher weight category in adulthood. Arab adolescents constitute a risk group for rapid BMI increase as they transition to adulthood. The present study could contribute to a better understanding of BMI dynamics and, in turn, to the development of more effective public health and policy interventions
Trends in adolescent obesity in the Arab ethnic minority in Israel
The goals of the study were to analyze trends, age, period and cohort effects on overweight/obesity among Arab adolescents in Israel. A retrospective cohort study of 345,852 Arab adolescents aged 14–19 years between the years 2007–2022, and 283,420 Jewish adolescents’ comparison group. Age effect was assessed by examining the effect of the age group (each year between 14 and 19 years), period effect by evaluation of the impact of the time period …
Associations of adolescent obesity with hypertension, diabetes mellitus and polycystic ovaries in Arabs and Jews in Israel—a nationwide study
Background: Previous studies on the association of adolescent obesity with comorbid diseases in Israel were conducted predominantly in the Israeli Jewish population. Goal: To compare associations of adolescent obesity with Hypertension (HTN), Diabetes Mellitus type 2 (DM2), and Polycystic ovaries (PCO), singly or in combination, between Arabs and Jews in Israel. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 313,936 Arab adolescents aged 14-19 years between…
Association Between Antenatal Antimicrobial Therapy and Autism Spectrum Disorder—A Nested Case-Control Study
Background: Multiple prenatal factors have been associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) risk. However, current data about the association between antimicrobial use during pregnancy and ASD is limited. Methods: A nested matched case-control study of children with ASD (cases), and children without ASD or other psychiatric or genetic disorders (controls). We compared the use of antimicrobial therapy during the 3 months before conception or du…
A proposed service model for early identification of autism spectrum disorder in ethnic communities in Southern Israel
Early autism spectrum disorder (ASD) detection is a precondition for effective intervention and facilitates significant improvements in functioning. In Israel, toddlers undergo general developmental screening by public health nurses (PHNs) at maternal and child health centres (MCHCs). Nevertheless, there are disparities among ethnic groups in the reported incidence of ASD. By means of an ecological model (EM), we identified strategies that improv…
