  • Of translation

    D J S Cross•ARTICLE•Translation Studies•2024

Although David Hume never addresses translation at length, he regularly invokes an interlingual movement at decisive moments in his work. Each of this article’s three sections addresses a pair of such moments. The first argues that translation establishes the association of ideas in A Treatise of Human Nature and An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding. The second analyzes translation as the ground of both the rational and the emotional argumen…

  • Euthanasia

    Open Access•D J S Cross•ARTICLE•Deleuze and Guattari Studies•2020

According to What Is Philosophy?, all disciplines combat opinion, but art fights most effectively because art and opinion both pertain to sensibility. Yet, this common provenance also makes the line dividing art and opinion porous. The stakes of this porosity are perhaps most visible in the relation of art to life. Although art must avoid two forms of death, ‘chaos’ and ‘opinion’, Deleuze and Guattari don't treat chaos and opinion equally. The fu…

  • Phenomenology, Literature, Dissemination

    D J S Cross•ARTICLE•Research in Phenomenology•2020

This article analyzes the complex relation of phenomenology and literature in the work of Husserl and Derrida. In the first part, I show that the limited ideality of the literary object necessarily situates it in a derivative region of phenomenology. In the second part, however, I problematize the regional status of literature by elaborating a brief but important footnote in which Husserl broadens the concept of literature to embrace all cultural…

  • The Problem of History and the Three Movements of Existence in Patočka on the Basis of an Appropriation of Arendt’s Anthropology

Édouard Pommier, Éric Pommier et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophy Today•2020

Jan Patočka holds that both the Husserlian and the Heideggerian descriptions of history remain abstract because they lack an authentic reflection on historical sense’s appearing, which presupposes a description of the transition from the nonhistorical and prehistorical states of humanity to its final historical state. Nevertheless, it seems that Patočka would confront an internal aporia here because, even if he sought to think the continuity of t…

  • Dead Theory

    D J S Cross•ARTICLE•Comparative Literature Studies•2017

Dead Theory collects a series of essays permutating “death,” “theory,” and “Derrida” in various rhythms and to various ends. For some contributors, the volume provides the occasion to respond to the alleged death of “theory” as a period or field: with proclamations of theory's rebirth in the numerous “studies” now populating the academic landscape (Jeffrey Di Leo, “Notes from the Underground”); with calls for the institutionalization of theory (W…

  • Lévinas after Hegel

Francis Guibal, Donald Cro et al.•ARTICLE•CR The New Centennial Review•2015•References: 2

[The original version of this text was presented at the colloquium on Lévinas’s Otherwise than Being, organized by Danielle Cohen-Lévinas and Alexander Schnell and held at the ENS Paris in November 2012. The problems of translating the French “esprit,” like the German “Geist,” are well known. Although it means both “mind” and “spirit,” the term has been systematically translated here as “spirit” and, for the sake of consistency, all translations …
