Speaking Spirits
Freedom Readers
Dennis Looney hooks his readers from the first pages of his introduction with a fascinating examination of a Cincinnati wax museum installation of Dante's otherworld in the late 1820s, and he never lets his readers' attention waver. He notes a nineteenth-century description of the Hiram Powers wax sculpture of a “poor old negro” freezing in the ice of hell and calls it “most likely the earliest association of Dante and African American culture in…

Prometheus, Jonah, Christ
Prometheus, Jonah, Christ
In his Scelta di poesie filosofiche (1622), Tommaso Campanella presents himself at times as another Prometheus, the Titan punished by his god for daring to bring illumination to human beings, other times as a Jonah figure, a prophet who in his reluctance to fulfill his divine command finds himself imprisoned in the most absurd conditions, and still other times as an alter-Christus, submitting to tortures and self-sacrifice out of a desire to save…
The Donna me prega of the Seicento? Reassessing Vico's Unautobiographical Affetti di un disperato
In this study Sherry Roush analyzes Giambattista VicoÕs "Affetti di un disperato" (Affections of a Desperate Man, 1693) as a theoretical canzone indebted to Guido CavalcantiÕs philosophical-poetic mode and Giovanni Della CasaÕs poetic Mannerism. She argues that VicoÕs poem deserves to be read on terms other than strictly autobiographical ones, finding that it presents a rational distillation in rhyme of widely debated philosophical notions, espec…

Dante as Piagnone Prophet
If imitation is the highest form of praise, then Girolamo Benivienis canto describing his otherworldly encounter with Dante's spirit is certainly a tribute to the author of the Divine Comedy. Despite its title, however, Benivieni's project is not simply epideictic. In it, Benivieni represents Dante in a highly anachronistic way, as a kind of spokesman for the piagnoni, the ardent supporters of Girolamo Savonarola's program of moral austerity and …
