Futures of Comparative Literature
Futures of Comparative Literature is a cutting-edge report on the state of the discipline in Comparative Literature. Offering a broad spectrum of viewpoints from all career stages, a variety of different institutions, and many language backgrounds, this collection is fully global and diverse. The book includes previously unpublished interviews with key figures in the discipline as well as a range of different essays - short pieces on key topics a…
Conditions of Comparison
Comparative literature, like many other disciplines, has now been grappling for some time with the question of how to extend its purview beyond the European languages and European-derived cultures that were its original home. Calls for attention to this question have, for example, been echoed in each of the decadal reviews of the state of the discipline commissioned by the American Comparative Literature Association since the 1960s. As that half …

Authorship and Cultural Identity in Early Greece and China
In this book, Alexander Beecroft explores how the earliest poetry in Greece (Homeric epic and lyric) and China (the Canon of Songs) evolved from being local, oral, and anonymous to being textualised, interpreted, and circulated over increasingly wider areas. Beecroft re-examines representations of authorship as found in poetic biographies such as Lives of Homer and the Zuozhuan, and in the works of other philosophical and historical authors like …

Oral Formula and Intertextuality in the Chinese “Folk” Tradition ( Yuefu )
Previous interpretations of early Chinese poetry (especially Han and Six Dynasties yuefu, or folk poetry) in terms of Milman Parry's and Albert Lord's oral-traditional poetics have run into a variety of conceptual and practical difficulties. I attempt to offer a more fruitful reading of the yuefu corpus in terms of orality, drawing in part on a re-reading of Parry and Lord and in part on recent linguistics-oriented scholarship in Classics. Throug…
World Literature Without a Hyphen
Literary studies with global ambitions are on the rise. But do they truly embrace the literatures of the world? Alexander Beecroft offers a typology of historically distinct kinds of writing that reaches further into the past and wider across human languages than any hitherto
Nine Fragments in Search of an Author
An examination of the nine fragments attributed to Terpander (some in ancient sources, some by modern editors) suggests that none is securely assigned to him. Indeed, the evidence suggests that most circulated in citharodic prooimia, and that the attribution to Terpander was a metonymic process of identification of a genre with its traditional founder. This interpretation makes better sense both of the fragments themselves and of the uses to whic…
