The Nordic Peace Support Operations Record, 1991–99
This article explores the notion of a ‘Nordic approach’ to peace support operations by analysing the Nordic states' commitment to UN interventions during the period of 1991–99. The Nordic states varied considerably in their individual choices on where, when and by what magnitude to commit to such interventions. The observed discrepancies reveal that the notion of a ‘Nordic approach’ is beset with strong limitations; the concept's implied homogene…
Democracy and susceptibility to UN intervention
The democratic peace proposition has generated the widely supported claim that democratic norms affect states' behaviour, in that democracies rarely, if ever, fight each other. Hitherto, the relationship between norms and the distribution of UN interventions among state conflicts has escaped attention. This article expands the research on state use of force by using quantitative methodology to examine the relationship between democratic norms, co…
United Nations Intervention by United Democracies
An ongoing study of the impact of democracy on the incidence of state commitment to UN interventions is examined, with a focus on state participation in UN interventions. It is hypothesized that, of potential committing states, democracies show the greatest propensity to participate in UN interventions. In contrast to the existing literature, which comprises mainly case studies, basic descriptive statistics are utilized in this article to probe t…
Democracies and UN peacekeeping operations, 1990–1996
This article analyses the relationship between the level of democracy in states and the inclination of states to engage in peacekeeping. Among the substantial contributors to peace‐support operations, well‐consolidated democracies show the greatest propensity to participate. Further, among the states in conflict, the non‐democratic states receive a disproportionate number of operations. Another intriguing observation is the fact that despite cons…
