You are Such a Bad Child! Appraisals as Mechanisms of Parental Negative and Positive Affect
Although parent cognitions are considered important predictors that determine specific emotional reactions and parental practices, models on the cognitive strategies for regulating parental distress or positive emotions are not well developed. Our aim was to investigate the nature of cognitions involved in parental distress and satisfaction, in terms of their specificity (parental or general) and their processing levels (inferential or evaluative…
Principles of Empirically Supported Interventions Applied to Anger Management
This article applies the Principles of Empirically Supported Interventions (PESI) in counseling psychology to anger management with adults. The review suggests that there is empirical support for cognitive-behavioral interventions generally and for four specific interventions (relaxation, cognitive, behavioral skill enhancement, and combinations of these three interventions). Psychotherapy outcome studies of anger are briefly reviewed. It is proposed that the primary problem in…

The current study was done to clarify these relationships by comparing scale profiles on the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory obtained by 144 inpatient residentially treated substance-abuse clients and 1000 general clinical outpatient clients in psychotherapy. A surprisingly large number of signi…
A Review of Rational-Emotive Psychotherapy Outcome Studies
Effects of a rational-emotive school mental health program on children's emotional adjustment
The effectiveness of a rational emotive mental health program on children's emotional adjustment was examined. Fourth and eighth grade students (n = 204) were given 15 weekly classroom sessions of rational emotive education. Comparisons were made with alternate treatment and no treatment controls at each grade level. In general, the results supported the hypotheses that rational emotive principles can be acquired by school children, and that such…
