  • Psychometric Examination of an Inventory of Self-Efficacy for the Holland Vocational Themes Using Item Response Theory

    Brandon M Turner, Nancy E Betz et al.•ARTICLE•Measurement and Evaluation in…•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The psychometric properties of measures of self-efficacy for the six themes of Holland’s theory were examined using item response theory. Item and scale quality were compared across levels of the trait continuum; all the scales were highly reliable but differentiated better at some levels of the continuum than others. Applications for adaptive testing methods in educational and career assessment are discussed

  • The Career Futures Inventory: A Measure of Career-Related Adaptability and Optimism

    Open Access•Patrick J Rottinghaus, Susan X Day et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Career Assessment•2005

The purpose of this study was to provide initial results on the development and validation of the Career Futures Inventory (CFI), a new 25-item measure of positive career planning attitudes. Items were originated using the rational method. Results from an item analysis of scale homogeneity and exploratory factor analysis in a sample of 690 undergraduates from a large midwestern university revealed three subscales: Career Adaptability, Career Opti…

  • Advancing Social Justice in Vocational Theory, Research, and Practice

    Open Access•Fred H Borgen•ARTICLE•The Counseling Psychologist•2005•Cited by: 4•References: 14

David Blustein, Ellen Hawley McWhirter, and Justin Perry present a social justice agenda for action in vocational psychology in their article “An Emancipatory Communitarian Approach to Vocational Development Theory, Research, and Practice.” They build on robust work in counseling psychology over recent decades by using the critical work of Isaac Prilleltensky as a fulcrum for advancing this agenda. Much of their case effectively argues that we sh…

  • Bulimic symptoms in high school females: Prevalence and relationship with multiple measures of psychological health

Open Access•Nancy Ann Meeuwsen Bennett, Richard Spoth et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•1991•References: 47

A 118-item survey assessed prevalence of bulimic symptomatology and examined multiple psychological health-related correlates in a sample of 2,042 midwestern high school females. Students completed the Bulimia Test (BULIT), Trait Anxiety Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, a General Self- Efficacy subscale, a Specific (eating) Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Goldfarb Fear of Fat Scale. Based on BULIT scores, 6.3% fell in the high symptom group, 9.3% f…

  • Applying cluster analysis in counseling psychology research.

    Fred H Borgen, David C Barnett•ARTICLE•Journal of Counseling Psychology•1987

As a research technique that has grown rapidly in applications in many scientific disciplines, cluster analysis has potential for wider use in counseling psychology research. We begin with a simple example illustrating the clustering approach. Topics covered include the variety of approaches in clustering, the times when cluster analysis may be a choice for analysis, the steps in cluster analysis, the data features, such as level, shape, and scat…

  • Cluster Analytic Detection of Biological Sex: A Second Look

    Fred H Borgen•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1983

Golden and Meehl (1980) conducted a simulation with MMPI items to determine the accuracy of six popular clustering methods in detecting biological sex. They concluded that the results were "poor to mediocre" and that clustering methods have limited potential for contributing to knowledge. Their conclusion is inconsistent with the prior Monte Carlo literature on cluster analysis. A second look at the Golden-Meehl results reveals satisfactory clust…
