Adult Psychopathology on the MMPI and Dysfunctional Families of Origin
Adults who were raised in dysfunctional families demonstrate psychopathology on the MMPI. 396 (140 men, 256 women) adult clients (mean age = 35 yr.) from dysfunctional families who were seeking treatment at a university counseling center were administered the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. The Repeatability of a Single-Session Group to Promote Safe Sex Behavior in a Male At-Risk Population
One hundred and seventeen single-session STOP AIDS discussion groups with 771 participants were conducted over an 18-month period. Employing the AIDS Prevention Test as an outcome measure, it was demonstrated that 114 of the 117 groups produced significant and equivalent change in AIDS-related knowledge, attitudes about personal efficacy in controlling the spread of the AIDS epidemic, and intended safer sex behavior. Three-month follow-up indicat…
Focusing on Emotion in Group Therapy: What Clients, What Problems, and What for
The problems discussed by the clients in three cognitive-behavioral (problem-solving emphasis) therapy groups of 16-week duration were classified by the therapists as (1) problems of inadequate or inappropriate emotional experience, (2) problems of inadequate or inappropriate emotional expression, or (3) other. Employing diagnoses made by therapists not involved in the present study, having a problem involving inadequate emotional experience was …
Health Locus of Control Changes during a Workshop in Behavioral Medicine
While measures of health locus of control have been employed to predict the responses of patients to various medical interventions, the beliefs of mental health professionals have been neglected. If t h s construct is a stable personality characteristic as Lau (1) suggests, it may be a selection variable for interest in behavioral medicine. If health locus of control is more statedependent, it may be a variable that changes with training in behav…
Method for Reducing Therapists' Bias When Judging Clients' Improvement
Therapists are often poor judges of clients' improvement and their judgments can be biased in either direction, false positive, or false negative. This study reports a method for reducing this bias. Twenty clients being transferred from one therapist to another as part of a normal rotation were studied. Two therapists terminating treatment and two new therapists (five clients each) filled out an 80-item questionnaire on each client giving the mos…
Combined Medical and Psychological Treatment of Postchemotherapy Nausea and Vomiting: A Case Study
The current case study illustrates the innovative potential of combined medical and psychological treatment of postchemotherapy nausea and vomiting for cancer patients. A 58-yr-old male patient diagnosed with leukemia and on a weekly cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) treatment protocol, experienced violent vomiting episodes approximately 3 hr. after each injection. Emesis was so severe that the patient considered terminating treatment. Control was att…
Assertiveness training in fourth‐ and fifth‐grade children
An assertiveness training program for 343 fourth- and fifth-grade children was designed and evaluated. All children in 10 classrooms were randomly assigned by classroom to one of three conditions: (a) assertiveness training, (b) a control intervention, or (c) a no-treatment control. The intervention procedures were administered for 2 hours a week for 12 weeks in groups of 6 pupils each. Assertiveness was higher among classes receiving assertion t…
Personal Space Variations as a Function of Criminal Behavior
Employing 90 delinquent male youths as subjects, the current investigation explores the relationship between the amount of personal space requested, ethnic background, and type of criminal offense. As predicted, the amount of personal space requested increases as a function of ethnic dissimilarity between the subject and the approachet. Of particular interest is the finding that the amount of personal space requested is directly related to the ty…

Assertion Training: The Training of Trainers
An investigation of a technique for facilitating patient to patient therapeutic interactions in group therapy
Positive and Negative Contrast in Successive Nondifferential Conditioning: A New Approach to Between-Subjects Methodology
Three groups of rats were trained to asymptote and then extinguished in a straight runway in order to have equivalent learning prior to a successive nondifferential conditioning experiment. The groups were then retrained under high, medium, and low reinforcement conditions for 18 trials. Finally all Ss were observed for 18 more trials under the medium reinforcement condition. Significant positive and negative contrast effects were found in mean r…
Reduction of Anxiety and Personal Space as a Function of Assertion Training with Severely Disturbed Neuropsychiatric Inpatients
7 severely disturbed neuropsychiatric inpatients participated in a 12-session assertion training program as well as the normal hospital milieu therapy program. A matched group participated in only the normal hospital milieu therapy routine. All Ss were compared on the dependent measures of personal space and the Spielberger Self-evaluation Questionnaire 1 wk. before and 1 wk. after the assertion training program. The experimental group showed a s…
