  • Future Situation and Personality

    Open Access•J W Mann•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1996

Expectations about the future were elicited from a class of 322 South African university students who were divided into four groups. Subjects completed a questionnaire about the near or far future and about the expected influence of either the outside situation or personality. The main finding was that subjects tilted towards the expectation that their personalities would dominate their futures, whether five or twenty-five years hence

  • Salient Group Labels

    Open Access•J W Mann•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1990•References: 2

Subjects in Study 1 had to estimate how successfully an error in a group label (French, Nigerian, brown, friendly or ‘Wallonian’) was detected. Markedly high estimates were elicited by Nigerian and ‘Wallonian’. Study 2 estimators had to guess what word was successfully detected as erroneous by a specified percentage of subjects. Only one out of 320 guesses was that the word was a racial or national label. Certain group labels were especially noti…

  • More About Môre

    Open Access•J W Mann, G A Tyson et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1988

A decade after a study of predictions about the future of psychology, student predictions are elicited again. This time, the predictions are made by psychology students who are either beginners or in their final year. The two groups differ little in their forecasts. Jointly, the students incline to defer the occurrence of events until 2025 at the earliest. Lack of knowledge or wishful thinking seem to explain many of the forecasts

  • Attraction between Sentence Parts

    Open Access•J W Mann•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1984

Grammatical error occurs when a verb is ‘attracted’ by the number of a complement, as in What is required are houses .... Ambiguity of number is important in attraction, and is manipulated in an experiment involving 100 Ss randomly allocated to 5 equal-sized treatment groups. Error depends on whether number is ambiguous or not in certain parts of a sentence

  • Wordiness in Retelling Narratives

    Open Access•J W Mann•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1984•References: 1

Two experiments deal with elaboration of narratives. In a preliminary experiment concerned with accurate recall, 30 Ss tend to reproduce a story in a shortened form. In the main experiment, 344 Ss have to rewrite a story to make it more interesting. The 2 × 2 × 2 design involves two different stories with the same structure and the inclusion or exclusion of two sentences expressing transition. Ss tend to lengthen stories and lengthening depends o…

  • The Atmosphere Effect in Narratives

    J W Mann•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1984

Previously, the grammatical atmosphere effect has been shown to operate within a sentence. One experiment found that atmospheres are effective also in entire narratives. A closely similar experiment confirmed the finding. Ss (N = 326) were allocated to four treatments: an unbroken or broken narrative containing many plurals and an unbroken or broken narrative containing many singulars. Responses depended on the plural or singular nature of the ma…

  • Attributions in Personal and Hierarchical Contexts

    Open Access•J W Mann•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1976

In a statement about refusal of good advice, descriptions of refuser and adviser are varied. Choices from words referring to refuser traits of different degrees of insultingness are made by 250 Ss divided into 5 treatment groups. Transposition of refuser and adviser matters when they are described as white employer and black servant, but not when described as self and friend. Instead of “kicking themselves” relatively hard, Ss are lenient towards…

  • Evaluating Social Consequences of Erotic Films

    Open Access•J W Mann, Jay Mann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1973•Cited by: 4•References: 4

A study is described that provides a methodological model for testing theoretical constructs and investigating pragmatic social problems simultaneously. Behavioral and attitudinal consequences of viewing erotic films are assessed in terms of cathartic, instigational, and social learning formulations. Comparative attitudinal and behavioral changes over a twelve‐week period are reported for 51 married couples who viewed erotic films, 17 couples who…
