  • A Postulated Tsunami and Its Effects on Cultural Development in the Peruvian Early Horizon

    Open Access•Robert M Bird•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1987•Cited by: 6•References: 31

While investigating the archaeological background of early maize on the coast of Peru, I realized that several factors affect interpretation. The estimated date for the start of common use of maize there is close to the apparent dates of a large tsunami, the abandonment of many coastal sites, and the start of occupation at Chavin de Huantar in the highlands. While investigating the possible relations between the principal pre-tsunami coastal cult…

  • Maize Recovered at La Ponga, an Early Ecuadorian Site

    Open Access•Ronald D Lippi, Robert M Bird et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1984•Cited by: 4•References: 9

Recent archaeological excavations at a Machalilla (“Early Formative”) site on Ecuador's south coast have resulted in the recovery of charred maize kernel and cupule fragments. A detailed study of the Machalilla maize described here suggests that two primitive varieties were present on the coast of Ecuador by 1200 B.C. Previously published reports that have attempted to establish the presence of maize during the preceding Valdivia phase are review…

  • Gallinazo Maize from the Chicama Valley, Peru

    Open Access•Robert M Bird, Junius B Bird•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1980•Cited by: 13•References: 5

A large sample of Gallinazo cobs from Huaca Prieta is classified using a set of five variables. Some types of Gallinazo maize recovered there seem to have been new to the Peruvian North Coast; some types of the preceding Salinar phase are not known from this site. Further changes occur in the Chicama-Viru area when Moche influence appears. In several ways Gallinazo maize seems more related to maize occurring today further north and east than to m…
