  • Global assessment of urban and peri-urban agriculture

    Open Access•Anne Thebo, A L Thebo et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2014

The role of urban agriculture in global food security is a topic of increasing discussion. Existing research on urban and peri-urban agriculture consists largely of case studies that frequently use disparate definitions of urban and peri-urban agriculture depending on the local context and study objectives. This lack of consistency makes quantification of the extent of this practice at the global scale difficult. This study instead integrates glo…

Bernard Keraita, Pay Drechsel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Most irrigation water used in urban vegetable farming in Ghana is contaminated with untreated wastewater. This poses health risks to farmers and consumers. As part of a study to explore options for health risk reduction, this paper summarizes farmers' perceptions on health risks and possible risk reduction measures. Participatory research methods and techniques such as focus group discussions, in‐depth interviews and visualization techniques were…

  • Heavy metal concentrations in urban and periurban soils of Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Dzerzhinsk, and Serpukhov, Russia

Pay Drechsel, Wolfgang Wilcke•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1999

The objective of this study was the assessment of the heavy metal status (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in soils of Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Dzerzhinsk, and Serpukhov. The mean concentrations (0–10 cm) except for Co decreased along the line Moscow > Serpukhov > Nizhny Novgorod > Dzerzhinsk. The heavy metal concentrations in the Moscow region were higher than in the Nizhny Novgorod region (including Dzerzhinsk) but lower than e.g., in Berlin, Ha…
