  • Western gorilla diet

Open Access•M Elizabeth Rogers, Kate Abernethy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2004

The objective of this paper is to collate information on western gorilla diet from six study sites throughout much of their current range, including preliminary information from two sites (Afi and Lossi), where studies of diet have begun only recently. Food lists were available from each site, derived from indirect signs of gorilla feeding (such as feces), with some observational data. Important staple, seasonal, and fallback foods have been iden…

  • Lowland gorillas and seed dispersal

Open Access•M Elizabeth Rogers, Benedict C Voysey et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1998

Lowland gorillas eat the fruit and disperse the seeds of many tree species in the Lopé Reserve, Gabon. This study aimed to show whether deposition of seeds at gorilla ground nest sites conferred any advantage for germination and seedling establishment as compared to the fate of seeds deposited in gorilla dung on trails or under parents. Four tree species were chosen for study, which had a range of fruit types and fruiting patterns but which were …

  • Ten days in the life of a mandrill horde in the Lopé Reserve, Gabon

Open Access•M Elizabeth Rogers, Kate A Abernethy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1996

Mandrills have long been known to form large aggregations in the wild, but it has proved difficult to obtain detailed information on the socioecology of these groups. An unusually large (>600) horde of mandrills was followed for ten days during the 1995 dry season in Central Gabon, and data were collected on group composition and ecology while the mandrills were in an area of forest-savanna mosaic habitat in the north of the Lopé Reserve. Three s…

  • Foraging profiles of sympatric lowland gorillas and chimpanzees in the Lopé Reserve, Gabon

    Open Access•Caroline E G Tutin, Michel Fernandez et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophical Transactions of the…•1991

Comparison of the diets of sympatric gorillas and chimpanzees allows an analysis of niche separation between these two closely related species. Qualitatively, their diets are similar, being dominated by an equally diverse array of fruit species complemented with vegetative plant parts, seeds and insects. Gorillas eat more vegetative plant parts than do chimpanzees, but niche separation is most obvious in periods of fruit scarcity when the two spe…

  • Composition of the diet of lowland gorillas at Lopé in Gabon

    Open Access•Elizabeth A Williamson, Caroline E G Tutin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1990

This report describes the composition of the diet of lowland gorillas, Gorilla gorilla gorilla , at Lopé in central Gabon. This population inhabits mature evergreen tropical forest and is not habituated to human observers. Data were collected during 6 years of an ongoing long‐term study, from feeding‐trails and by direct observation, but mostly by fecal analysis. Gorillas ate 182 plant foods from 134 species and 36 families. The fruit diet was di…

  • Brief report

    Open Access•W C Mcgrew, M Elizabeth Rogers•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1983

Wild chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ) in northeastern Gabon use tools made of vegetation to obtain termites ( Macrotermes? nobilis ) for food. They mostly use probes in termite fishing, as recorded elsewhere in eastern and far western Africa. This is the first record of termite fishing by the central west African race of chimpanzees. There are signs that they also use stouter tools, perhaps to perforate the mounds of the termites. These new findin…
