  • The Limit of Mental Structures

    George Mandler•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The "magical" number of 4 has been demonstrated to limit much of human information processing. The relevant evidence is briefly reviewed. It is proposed that the organization of processing structures is based on interconnected bidirectional pairs, with every element paired with every other one. The limit arises because of the large increase in links among elements required beyond structures of size 3 and 4

  • Emotion

    Open Access•Nicholas Christenfeld, Nicholas J S Christenfeld et al.•OTHER•Handbook of Psychology, Second…•2012

There have been roughly as many theories of emotion as there have been people thinking about the topic. Despite several millennia of investigation, there is still little agreement about what constitutes an emotion, how many emotions there are, and whether such a number is even meaningful. One important and abiding distinction between various theories of emotion is that between the mentalist and the organic traditions. The organic tradition largel…

    George Mandler•ARTICLE•History of Psychology•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The destruction of psychological science during the early years of the National Socialist (NS) regime is an important part of psychology's history. The proceedings of the congresses of the German Society for Psychology describe the very quick takeover of German psychology by the supporters of the regime and the removal of any opponents of the regime and of Jewish members from the executive structure. The leadership of the field was taken over by …

  • Origins of the cognitive (r)evolution

    Open Access•George Mandler•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of the…•2002•Cited by: 8•References: 35

The well documented cognitive "revolution" was, to a large extent, an evolving return to attitudes and trends that were present prior to the advent of behaviorism and that were alive and well outside of the United States, where behaviorism had not developed any coherent support. The behaviorism of the 1920 to 1950 period was replaced because it was unable to address central issues in human psychology, a failure that was inherent in part in J. B. …

  • Recognizing: The judgment of previous occurrence.

    George Mandler•ARTICLE•Psychological Review•1980

Several suggestions for a class of theories of recognition memory have been proposed during the past decade. These models address predictions about judgments of prior occurrence of an event, not the identification of what it is, The history and current status of one of these models is discussed. The model postulates the detection of familiarity and the utilization of retrieval mechanisms as additive and separate processes. The phenomenal experien…

In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) flat membrane was fabricated to remove the total ammonia from saline water by direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) at 50°C The effects of initial NH3 concentration from 0.03 to 0.47M, temperature from 30 to 50°C and salinity from 0 to 35ppt on ammonia-ammonium equilibrium, however, were initially investigated by using Law of Ostwald's Dissociation. The PVDF membranes were then fabricated from d…
