  • Loss of ferritin‐positive microglia relates to increased iron, RNA oxidation, and dystrophic microglia in the brains of aged male marmosets

    Open Access•Juan de Dios Rodríguez‐Callejas, Juan D Rodríguez-Callejas et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2019

Microglia are cells that protect brain tissue from invading agents and toxic substances, first by releasing pro-inflammatory cytokines, and thereafter by clearing tissue by phagocytosis. Microglia express ferritin, a protein with ferroxidase activity capable of storing iron, a metal that accumulates in brain during aging. Increasing evidence suggests that ferritin plays an important role in inflammation. However, it is not known if ferritin/iron …

  • Attack and defense in conspecific fighting in tree shrews ( Tupaia belangeri )

    Open Access•Robert J Blanchard, Frauke Ohl et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2001•Cited by: 2•References: 29

Principles of conspecific defense have been analyzed for rodents, in which specific target sites for biting by attackers on defenders serve as an important determinant of the actions involved in both attacker and defender behavior. In an effort to determine the generality of these principles, attack and defensive behaviors and target sites for biting attack were evaluated in a nonrodent species, the tree shrew ( Tupaia belangeri ). Brief daily an…
