Postscript to Mrs Ewing and the St Kitts Mummies' Plays
This note follows up loose ends remaining from the article ‘Mrs Ewing and the Textual Origin of the St Kitts Mummies’ Plays', published in Folklore in 1996. In particular, it reports on how Ewing's play The Peace Egg was transmitted to St Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean, and resolves a minor confusion regarding the sources she used in compiling her text
The Truro Cordwainers' Play: A "New" Eighteenth-Century Christmas Play
The Christmas play hitherto attributed to Mylor has been re-ascribed to Truro in the late 1780s, using biographical information concerning the actors, and physical characteristics of the manuscript. It becomes the oldest Saint George play to feature Father Christmas and the Turkish Knight, and has textual parallels with Irish folk plays
Mrs Ewing and the Textual Origin of the St Kitts Mummies' Play
This paper looks at the St Kitts and Nevis Mummies' plays as published in Folklore by Roger Abrahams (1968). It demonstrates that the texts were originally taken from a play published by the Victorian children's author Mrs J.H. Ewing. This play appeared in several editions, most notably in two series issued by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge.
