Digital Storytelling
This study examines the impact of writing instruction on Spanish heritage language (SHL) learners’ attitudes towards digital stories (DS) and self-efficacy beliefs with regard to academic writing, multiliteracies, and computer abilities. Two types of writing instruction—a traditional curriculum centered around genres and a multiliteracies curriculum consisting of the interpretation and design of DSs—were implemented in fourth and fifth-semester S…
Sorry, that's all I know!”
This study examines the impact of instructor‐led (IL) versus self‐access (SA) web‐based pragmatic instruction on novice second language learners' ( n = 28) awareness and oral production of Spanish apologies. Two sections of a second‐semester Spanish course were assigned to either the IL or the SA group. The web‐based resource Dancing with Words was used to provide pragmatic instruction. Participants in the SA group worked through the materials in…
Novice or expert? Heritage speaker's orientation to the novice-expert paradigm
In your own backyard
This study examines the impact of two types of culture instruction on students’ motivation —a traditional curriculum that pivots on Spanish-speaking countries and a redesigned curriculum focused on US Hispanic communities. Drawing on Gardner’s (1985. Social psychology and second language learning: The role of attitudes and motivation. London: Edward Arnold) socio-educational model, a survey was developed to measure participants’ (N = 869) integra…
Videoconferencing and the development of intercultural competence
This manuscript contributes to the existing body of literature on intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in the context of computer‐mediated communication by examining how fourth‐semester learners of Spanish ( n = 18) display and develop ICC over the course of a semester. Novel to this study are: (1) the use of service‐provider virtual exchanges to carry out the videoconferencing conversations between second language (L2) learners and nativ…
Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Training
This study explores current practices of teaching assistant (TA) training in doctoral-granting institutions and expands on previous studies by exploring the views of both faculty and graduate students involved in the process. Our overall goal is to determine whether training practices and goals have changed and, if so, to what extent, in order to reflect the changing objectives of the foreign language (FL) field in the last decades—objectives tha…
Beginning Learners' Development of Interactional Competence
This study examined the development of interactional competence (Hall, 1993; He & Young, 1998) by beginning learners of Spanish as indexed by their use of alignment moves. Discourse analysis techniques and quantitative data analysis were used to explore how 52 learners expressed alignment and changes in participation patterns in two sets of instructional peer‐to‐peer conversations. The results of the analyses show that, although subject to great …
