Quantitative Surveys
Research involving the use of surveys to collect data has long been prevalent in applied linguistics. Survey research differs from experimental research in that the researcher does not try to manipulate or control the setting or variables being studied. Rather, the researcher seeks to compile or gather information that usually cannot be observed directly or examined through performance data. Surveys are useful in collecting data that respondents …
Pillars of their practice
Drawing on a series of interviews of teacher residents, this study investigates residents’ foundational beliefs, the influences that shaped them, and the extent to which they changed during their residencies. This study has three primary findings. First, residents developed a more sophisticated understanding of what relational teaching entails. Second, residents increasingly recognized the importance of making real-world connections as a motivato…
Devotion to Duty
The federal government program, Troops to Teachers, supports veterans in transitioning into the teaching profession. Research has consistently documented the efficacy of this program, but has yet to provide an explanation of its relative effectiveness. Using data collected for a study on preservice teachers’ evolving principles and classroom practices, we present a case study of a former Troops to Teachers participant to explore the nature of the…

Teaching and Testing L2 Spanish Listening Using Scripted vs. Unscripted Texts
Even after years of study, many second language (L2) learners have difficulty comprehending proficient speakers in real‐world settings. This difficulty stems partly from the inauthentic nature of the spoken texts learners are exposed to in foreign language (FL) classrooms—scripted, simplified, and overenunciated “textbook texts.” This study compared the performance of intermediate university FL Spanish learners on a listening comprehension test u…
‘Co-constructing’ Explicit L2 Knowledge with High School Spanish Learners through Guided Induction
This article documents how second language (L2) Spanish learners in an American high school formulated explicit grammar rules during three inductive lessons on the pronominal clitic se. Following Adair-Hauck et al. (2010), each lesson first presented a property of se within a narrative text, and then had learners inductively ‘Co-construct’ grammar rules in groups of 2–3. Groups then reported back to the class, with the teacher guiding them toward…

The effect of the use of video texts on ESL listening test-taker performance
Video is widely used in the teaching of L2 listening, and SLA researchers have argued that the visual components of spoken texts are useful for the listener in comprehending aural information. Yet video texts are rarely used on tests of L2 listening ability, perhaps in part due to the belief that including the visual channel involves assessing something beyond listening ability. In this study, a quasi-experimental design was used to compare the p…
