Dislocations of empire
This article considers the origins and evolution of colonies de vacances and childhood and youth estivage (summer leisure) in Morocco, over the lifespan of the French Protectorate. It will show how these practices manifested, and sometimes challenged, the social and spatial separations that were inherent to the Moroccan colonial order. The colonies served as enclaves of a kind in the earlier period of the Protectorate, designed to secure European…
La Vie Alpine Marocaine’
This article considers the role of ‘Alpine’ mobilities and physicalities in the pursuit of colonial territoriality in Morocco under the French Protectorate. It focuses on the development of alpinisme (mountaineering) and sports d’hiver (winter sports) as variants of tourisme en montagne (mountain tourism) in the Haut-Atlas Mountains, the highest altitude point of ‘Greater France’. Amidst what was a protracted situation of unsettled sovereignty in…

Richard Ivan Jobs. Backpack Ambassadors
Some, if not many, of the readers of Richard Ivan Jobs’s revealing book Backpack Ambassadors: How Youth Travel Integrated Europe might carry fond recollections of their own youthful travel in Europe, with its familiar repertoire of Eurail Passes, youth hostel stays, and passport stamps. Fewer will likely suppose that what they were doing was part of a transnational movement of genuine and enduring historical significance. Yet Jobs advances precis…
Tourism, empire and aftermath in French North Africa
This review considers recent scholarly research dedicated to colonial tourism in French North Africa, and looks to signal important lacunae and avenues of possibility for future work. Despite the prominent ‘colonial turn’ in French historical studies since the 1990s, and an ever-burgeoning interdisciplinary and transnational scholarship in Tourist Studies, North African tourism has been relatively slow to attract sustained research attention. By …
The French Riviera
Written by the author of multiple popular accounts of the history of the French Riviera/Côte d’Azur, this slender book provides a quick (though detail laden) tour through the entirety of the area’s history, from the prehistoric settlement at Terra Amata through centuries of Greek and Roman colonization, religious and dynastic conflict, and modern reinvention as an international tourist Mecca. Nelson conceives the geographic area of the Côte d’Azu…

A Tasteful Patrimony? Landscape Preservation and Tourism in the Sites and Monuments Campaign, 1900–1935
This article analyzes the Touring Club de France's Sites and Monuments campaign as a nationwide initiative to define and secure the value of natural landscapes in the face of accelerated economic change in rural France. In its work of inventorying, representation, and associational intervention in Brittany, I argue, the campaign formalized recognition of both a national and tourist interest vis-à-vis the Breton natural landscape; the ethos of bou…
