What Makes a Reparation Successful? A Discussion to Inform Design of Reparations to Black Americans
Reparations policies that seek to make amends for a harm incurred face exigent challenges. In this article we focus on what makes reparations successful and what policy components are necessary, if not sufficient, for success. To study the success of reparations policy design we employ a case study approach. Our analysis investigates the motivation, design, implementation, and impact of past policies to understand what has been successful or unsu…
Worker Mobility in Practice
Worker mobility—the ability to find and take another job—is at the core of worker power, and, conversely, worker immobility is at the core of employer power. This paper presents evidence of barriers to worker mobility in terms of labor market constraints (can a worker find another job?) and financial constraints (can a worker afford to transition to another job?). The theoretical context of these findings is dynamic monopsony: the harder it is fo…
A Note from the Editors
In August 2022 we handed over the editorship of French Historical Studies to its ninth team in its sixty-five-year history. Christine Haynes (University of North Carolina at Charlotte) and Jennifer Heuer (University of Massachusetts Amherst) have taken the helm, bringing new expertise and energy to FHS. They will benefit from the experience of our managing editor, Laura Foxworth, and from the excellent staff at Duke University Press, especially t…
Moonlighting to the Side Hustle
Although working more than one job to avoid economic hardship is not a new strategy for U.S. workers, official estimates suggest it is infrequent. These may not, however, include new conceptualizations of work like “side hustles.” To understand who works multiple jobs and its effect on economic well-being, we expanded the definition and used the Survey of Income and Program Participation to estimate (a) prevalence and (b) the effect of secondary …
Trends in Income From 1975 to 2018
For two decades after World War II, incomes grew at a rate close to the U.S. economy-wide growth rate. Anemic growth from 1969 to 1974 kept inequality in check. But since then, the benefits of growth have not been evenly distributed. Racial and gender inequality is also manifested in income inequality

Monster im Mittelalter
At its most basic level, Monster im Mittelalter traces the characteristics and significance of the monstrous in medieval European literature. Yet Professor Simek goes beyond such a seemingly simplistic structure. In this single book he combines an eighty-page lexicon of medieval monstrous beings with a broad interpretation of monsters, wonders, and the fabulous encompassing material ranging from ancient Greek mythology to modern media. Clear yet …

The History of Ghosts in Early Modern Europe
Although some scholars in the 1970s and 1980s noted the frequent appearance of ghosts in early modern European society, only in the last fifteen years have ghosts received more systematic study and most synthetic works are products of the last five years. Beginning with a definition of “ghost” that considers the early modern context, this article examines ghostly apparitions in a wide variety of fields ranging from the history of crime, drama, an…
