  • The syntactic structure of the isovist

Open Access•John Peponis, Gonzalo Vegas et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2025

A new way of analysing the individual isovist is proposed. We show how to identify ‘thresholds’ which divide the isovist into an inner area and multiple outer areas, sometimes visible in successive layers of visual depth and sometimes extending in different directions. Thus, the ideas of depth and distributedness, fundamental to the descriptive theory of space syntax, are brough to bear on the spatial structure of the individual isovist. Furtherm…

  • Space syntax and design

    Open Access•John Peponis•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2024

Space syntax; means and ends in design; social functions of space; human affordances of space

  • Pathways to creating differentiated grids

    Open Access•Chen Feng, John Peponis•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2022

The patterns of syntactic differentiation and their causes and effects are fundamental to space syntax analysis. Often, however, differentiation is taken for granted with no reference to the dynamic process that brings it about. Here, we first show that by measuring the amount of syntactic differentiation, we can better distinguish between types of street networks. We then show that repeated local transformations of a regular street grid lead to …

  • Algorithmic definitions of street network centrality sub-shapes

    Open Access•Chen Feng, John Peponis•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2022

The shape and distribution of the most integrated streets, collectively called the integration core, is critical to the characterization of local and global street network types in the space syntax literature. The description of the shape, position, and distribution of integration cores relative to the underlying street networks, however, has remained largely intuitive. We propose analytic and algorithmic definitions of integration core types. We…

  • The definition of syntactic types

    Open Access•Chen Feng, John Peponis•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2020

Syntactic types are defined as sets of designs with particular properties. We are specifically interested in the definition of deformed grids, a particular type of street network internal to superblocks. The superblocks under study are surrounded by arterial streets and have traversing local main streets and internal street infills. The argument takes advantage of three kinds of rules or algorithms: generative rules that produce a universe of des…

  • Understanding the link between street connectivity, land use and pedestrian flows

Open Access•Ayşe Özbil Torun, Ayse Ozbil et al.•ARTICLE•URBAN DESIGN International•2011

  • The structure of urban space, movement and co-presence

Open Access•John Peponis, Catherine Ross et al.•ARTICLE•Geoforum•1997•Cited by: 14

  • The Spatial Culture of Factories

    Open Access•John Peponis•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1985•Cited by: 6•References: 15

This paper argues that factory layouts have social functions over and above the purely technical ones and that such functions can be described with accuracy. It relates the fundamental design choices that are identified by the analysis to the spatial requirements of organizations. Thus, it suggests that the design olfactory space has strategic effects on the culture of workplaces. Spatial variables are based on the theory of space syntax develope…
