The largest Dam removal project in Europe occurred in 2019 with removal of the Vezins Dam on the Sélune River in Normandy, France. The French State ordered removal of the 36-m high Vezins Dam and the 16-m high la Roche-qui-Boit Dam along the Sélune River to restore ecological and longitudinal connectivity to improve riparian water quality, and especially to restore migratory species of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and eel (Anguilla anguilla).
