  • The contribution of land cover change to the decline of honey yields in the Northern Great Plains

Open Access•David J Smith, David Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Decreased availability of forage, as well as increased pesticide exposure, are important factors in the decline of honey bee health. Here, we isolate land cover transitions and their effect on honey production at 160 commercial apiaries in the Northern Great Plains. We found that land cover changes from 2008 to 2012 caused an annual decline in honey yields of 0.9% in the study area. Transitions from grassland to soybean (but not corn) were partic…

  • The environmental and economic costs of sprawling parking lots in the United States

    Open Access•Amélie Y Davis, Bryan C Pijanowski et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 17

Urban sprawl is considered by most environmental scientists and urban planners to be a serious environmental problem. However, public perception about parking availability often forces planning offices to recommend parking lot sizes that exceed daily demands. The recent trend of increasing the size of stores, churches and even schools comes with increasing the size of parking lots that service these buildings. The objective of this paper is to an…
