Does Sending a Printed Survey as the Final Reminder Boost Response Rate? A Mixed Mode Approach
Declining response rates in social science surveys are a widespread challenge for human dimensions of natural resources researchers. In this research note, we tested two modes for the final survey reminder: a letter reminding the recipient to complete the survey and a printed survey. Despite the cost of printing and mailing a survey, this approach increased our response rate and had a better return on investment. Additionally, paper survey respon…
Optimizing forest defoliation detection using remote sensing data: A multi–resolution approach using machine learning algorithms
Involving People in Conservation: Perceptions from Maine, USA
Environmental conservation groups involve people in diverse ways. These include participatory spaces where people can participate in decision-making and action and engagement processes, where groups communicate, educate, and conduct outreach to build environmental understanding and involve audiences in conservation activities. We explored the perceptions and experiences of conservation practitioners in Maine, USA, to understand their views of par…
Drivers of Climate Change Risk Perceptions among Diverse Forest Stakeholders in Maine, USA
Climate change is impacting forest ecosystems, which support key ecosystem services and the general well-being of natural resource-dependent communities in Northeastern, USA. Understanding the determinants of climate change risk perceptions among forest resource stakeholders is critical to eliciting broad support for adaptation. We examined social-psychological drivers of climate change risk perceptions using hierarchical regression based on an o…
Understanding characteristics of forest professionals and small woodlot owners for communicating climate change adaptation
Forest stakeholders are a highly heterogeneous group with varied perceptions that are important to consider when engaging in dialog to increase climate change adaptation. We conducted an online survey of two forestry groups in Maine, U.S., classified as (1) forest professionals, and (2) small woodlot owners. We compared their climate change risk perceptions, socio-cultural influences, information sources, self-efficacy, barriers and incentives to…
New valuation for defying degradation: Visualizing mangrove forest dynamics and local stewardship with remote sensing in coastal Ecuador
