An Investigation of Self-Assessment Bias in Mental Health Providers
Previous research has consistently found self-assessment bias (an overly positive assessment of personal performance) to be present in a wide variety of work situations. The present investigation extended this area of research with a multi-disciplinary sample of mental health professionals. Respondents were asked to: (a) compare their own overall clinical skills and performance to others in their profession, and (b) indicate the percentage of the…
Multilingualism in Brussels
Language is both a divisive and a unifying force in Brussels. Historically predominantly Dutch-speaking, surrounded by the officially Dutch-speaking federal state of Flanders, located in a majority Dutch-speaking nation-state, and with the majority of its Belgian citizens Francophone, Brussels has officially been bilingual Dutch–French since 1962. This paper reports the results of a survey undertaken to uncover the actual language usage and prefe…
Multicultural Iberia
romance Triste deleytaçión was a Castilian-writing Catalan.Cortijo focuses on the influence of bilingual author Pere Torroella, whose misogynistic Maldezir de mugeres, apparently "interpreted as an attack against the literary and social status quo," sparked not only adverse reaction, but also a parody, Repetición de amores, parts of which bear a resemblance to "the anonymous first act of Celestina."By comparing some twenty manuscripts, Cortijo ra…
Crossing the Line in Quebec and Catalonia
The linguistically “mixed” marriage stands at the crossroads of important factors in the future of French in North America and Catalan in Europe: reversing language shift. While Quebec and Catalonia initially appear strikingly similar, one could easily conclude that if the couple exogamique is good for the future of Catalan, it will also favor francisation in Quebec. Strong evidence indicates that demographic, linguistic, socioeconomic, and even …
Language Policies and Independence Politics in Québec
I'm Catalan but I'm Not a Fanatic
Linguistically "Mixed" Families in Catalonia
Catalan and Castilian as Prestige Languages
