Given the centrality of African empire to Spain's history in the first half of the twentieth century, the process of decolonization which followed appeared to have little impact on the Spanish metropole. This article argues that humanitarianism, particularly Catholic humanitarianism, was one of the few ways in which the impact of decolonization was felt within Spain. Socialist Internationalism and the Gritty Politics of the Particular
This collection takes a case study approach to enter into and explore spaces of ‘Second-Third World’ interaction during the Cold War. From the dining halls of a university, to hospital wards, construction sites, military barracks, pubs and more, the chapters drop the scale down from the global to the particular to better see, understand and interpret the complex nature of these spaces.
Christian Humanitarianism, Refugee Stories, and the Making of the Cold War West
This article argues that refugees and the Christian humanitarian organizations supporting them, particularly Catholic ones, helped to construct the Cold War West. Christian NGOs valued these refugees, not only for their needs or their suffering, but for the power of their stories. Transnational Exchange in the Nazi New Order
This article uses the case of the Spanish Blue Division to examine the history of transnational exchange and cooperation within the Nazi New Order. In particular, it explores the experiences of the Blue Division's medical services, which were required to engage most closely with the international environment of the Eastern Front.
