  • Newly Discovered Illustrated Texts of Aratus and Eratosthenes Within Codex Climaci Rescriptus

    Open Access•Peter J Williams, Patrick James et al.•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•2022•References: 1

This article presents texts recovered by post-processing of multispectral images from the fifth- or sixth-century underwriting of the palimpsest Codex Climaci Rescriptus. Texts identified include the Anonymous II Proemium to Aratus’ Phaenomena , parts of Eratosthenes’ Catasterisms , Aratus’ Phaenomena lines 71–4 and 282–99 and previously unknown text, including some of the earliest astronomical measurements to survive in any Greek manuscript. Cod…

    Peter J Williams•ARTICLE•Early Christianity•2017

  • A Presumption in Favour of Home Ownership? Reconsidering Housing Tenure Strategies

Alan Murie, Peter Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 28

This paper discusses changes in housing finance, tenure and policy in the UK in the context of Kemeny's important and influential discussion of political tenure strategies. The evolution of housing tenure in that country since the 1970s has not conformed to the thesis of a simple presumption in favour of home ownership and the paper argues that the framework for housing analysis must look beyond tenure categories, recognise the complex variations…

  • Early Syriac Translation Technique and the Textual Criticism of the Greek Gospels

    Peter J Williams•BOOK•Early Syriac Translation…•2013

Although scholars have often made inferences about the Greek texts that lay behind the Old Syriac and Peshitta versions of the Gospels, very few have ever attempted to formulate systematic rules for such inferences. This volume investigates a wide range of textual phenomena and formulates clear and simple rules for the use of Syriac texts as witnesses to the underlying Greek. It becomes possible to uncover errors that have accumulated during the …

  • Causes and Consequences? Exploring the Shape and Direction of the Housing System in the UK Post the Financial Crisis

Christine Whitehead, Peter Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2011•Cited by: 25•References: 4

The impacts of the global financial crisis continue to reverberate around the world. This paper explores its impacts in the UK in general and England in particular in relation to the housing market and housing policy. It examines the underlying trends which were already in place before the financial crisis and the impact of the crisis and the government's policy responses on the housing and mortgage markets. The paper argues that the crisis mainl…

  • Advances in engineered remediation for use in the Arctic and Antarctica

    Open Access•Dennis M Filler, C M Reynolds et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2006

Creative remediation schemes have been implemented with success at petroleum-contaminated sites in Alaska and Canada during the past decade. Contaminated media have been landfarmed, amended with fertilizers, augmented with microbial products, and manipulated with engineered systems. Phytoremediation developments and use of biodegradable synthetic and polymeric resins for potential use with petroleum and xenobiotic contaminants are on the horizon.…

  • Contaminants in freezing ground and associated ecosystems

    Open Access•Ian Snape, Martin J Riddle et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2003

The ways by which contaminants in freezing ground disperse and interact with associated ecosystems is a new and challenging field of applied research that is crucial to effective assessment, monitoring, and remediation in cold regions. Three key issues have been identified as needing urgent research and development. The first concerns the development and application of meaningful environmental guidelines for cold regions. This usually means that …

  • Financial aspects of development of remediation technologies for contaminants in soils in cold regions

    Open Access•Peter J Williams•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2003

During the last several decades there has been much financial investment in the cold regions on projects (mining, oil and gas, etc) that can be the source of ground contamination and that require actions to prevent, mitigate, or remedy such effects. Yet contamination in freezing ground and its remediation have been the subject of research largely only in the last 10 years. This is a short time in terms of research and subsequent technology develo…

  • Some Problems in Determining the Vorlage of Early Syriac Versions of the NT

    Open Access•Peter J Williams•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•2001

Three translation issues in the Syriac NT are considered: the translation of καρπος, of παντα ταυτα or ταυτα παντα, and of διαβολος. In each case the Novum Testamentum Graece uses Syriac authorities to witness to a variant, but an examination of those authorities demonstrates that while they may support the readings for which they are cited they also could have arrived at their translation due to preferences peculiar to Syriac

  • The influence of soil microstructure on hydraulic properties of hydrocarbon-contaminated freezing ground

    Open Access•Thomas L White, Peter J Williams•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1999•References: 4

The significance of the thermodynamic relations of ice and water within the paniculate and porous soil medium has been widely demonstrated in recent decades. The existence of unfrozen water along with ice at temperatures below 0°C, because of capillary and mineral surface forces, is responsible for the specific thermal, mechanical, and hydraulic properties of soils exposed to seasonal or perennial freezing. The introduction of a hydrocarbon conta…
