Elite women were directly involved in policy decisions at the highest levels, and, like elite men, might control large armies and estates. Some were Christian, Muslim, or Buddhist, and served as patrons of these religions for their nomadic followers and for c…

This book positions women in their rightful place in the otherwise well-known story of Chinggis Khan (commonly known as Genghis Khan) and his conquests and empire. Examining the best known women of Mongol society, such as Chinggis Khan's mother, Hö'elün, and senior wife, Börte, as well as those who were less famous but equally influential, includin…
Marriage, Family and Politics
The Chinggisids clearly favoured specific in-law clans through policies of repeated marriage over generations. This paper charts the fortunes of one such clan, the Oirats, who first joined the Chinggisids when Chinggis Khan and Börte's daughter Chechiyegen wedded an Oirat prince. Thereafter Chechiyegen's own daughters married back to the Toluid, Jochid and Chagatayid families. This paper follows those Oirats who intermarried with the Ilkhanids, b…
Practising Diplomacy in the Mamluk Sultanate
Doris Behrens-Abouseif has undertaken a significant project on diplomatic gifts in the Mamluk Sultanate, and has made an important and meaningful contribution to knowledge. Although previously scholars addressed either art historical questions on the one hand, or Mamluk diplomacy on the other, they provided only limited coverage of the diplomatic gifts themselves. By contrast, Behrens-Abouseif presents an innovative blend of historical detail and…
