  • Borrowing and (Mis-)Attribution in Ottoman Fatwas

Boğaç A Ergene, Atabey Kaygun•ARTICLE•Islamic Law and Society•2026

This article combines “distant” (computational) and “close” (human) reading techniques to investigate jurisprudential continuity, borrowing, and attribution within the fatwa compilations of Ottoman şeyhülislam s. We analyze the lexical and semantic characteristics of six major corpora that span the sixteenth to the early twentieth centuries to identify the extent and nature of textual replication, adaptation, and conceptual overlap across thousan…

  • Change Visible from a Distance

    Open Access•Boğaç A Ergene, Atabey Kaygun•ARTICLE•International Journal Middle East…•2022•References: 17

Using a distant reading methodology, the article examines the thematic compositions of fetva compilations by four Ottoman şeyhülislam s in the early modern era. Our analysis of the fetva s from the late 17th and early 18th centuries reveal that the majority of these opinions concerned a small number of issues, including women, family problems, contractual matters, and disputes and litigations. The article also demonstrates that the representation…

  • The Textual Evolution of the Ottoman Şeyhülislam s’ Fetva s

Bogac Ergene, Boğaç A Ergene et al.•ARTICLE•Der Islam•2021

In this article, we use a mix of computational techniques to identify textual shifts in the Ottoman şeyhülislam s’ fetva s between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries. Our analysis, supplemented by a close reading of these texts, indicates that the fetva s underwent multiple forms of transformation, a consequence of the institutional evolution of the şeyhülislam ’s fetva office ( fetvahane ) that aimed to speed up and streamline the production …

  • Semantic Mapping of An Ottoman Fetva Compilation

Open Access•Bogac Ergene, Boğaç A Ergene et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Studies•2020•Cited by: 1

Fetva collections are important sources for Islamic legal history. However, few scholars have considered a particular collection of fetvas or the fetvas of an individual jurist as specific areas of legal and historical exploration. Instead, most researchers use fetvas selectively and instrumentally, that is in (at best) small groups, and in their explorations of various other topics. This article proposes computational methodologies that could ch…

  • Loglinear Analysis of Intergenerational Mobility in Eighteenth-Century Ottoman Anatolia

Boğaç A Ergene, Atabey Kaygun•ARTICLE•Journal of the Economic and…•2014•References: 28

In this article we use loglinear techniques to examine intergenerational mobility patterns in eighteenth-century Ottoman Kastamonu. The research is based on estate inventories (terekes) and involves an analysis of the honorific titles of fathers and sons. The article demonstrates how father-son title-sharing was structured across different socio-economic groups and reveals the possible avenues of intergenerational status mobility. In addition, th…

  • A temporal analysis of wealth in eighteenth-century Ottoman Kastamonu

    Open Access•Boğaç A Ergene, Atabey Kaygun et al.•ARTICLE•Continuity and Change•2013•Cited by: 3

This article studies temporal variations in wealth levels and distribution in an Ottoman context during the eighteenth century. By analysing the probate estate inventories of the Muslim deceased in Kastamonu, located in north-central Anatolia, we demonstrate that real wealth levels generally declined over the course of the century. Our analysis also suggests that the economic conditions of poor men, if not women, deteriorated more so than those o…

  • Spouse Selection and Marital Mobility in the Ottoman Empire

    Boğaç A Ergene, Atabey Kaygun•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 42

Based on the information found in probate estate inventories, this article examines patterns of spousal preference and marital mobility in eighteenth-century Ottoman Kastamonu, located in northern Anatolia. For this purpose, we introduce quantitative techniques and categories of analysis specifically designed for Ottoman sources, primarily postmortem estate inventories (terekes), allowing us to measure how various socioeconomic groups established…

  • Intergenerational mobility in the Ottoman Empire

    Boğaç A Ergene, Atabey Kaygun•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Based on probate estate inventories from eighteenth-century Kastamonu in north Anatolia, this study examines intergenerational mobility patterns in one Ottoman provincial town. Although the topic is well-studied in many Western contexts, historical and contemporary, we still know little about the ways in which socioeconomic disparities and class identities were transmitted across subsequent generations of parents and children in the Ottoman Empir…
