  • Do Social Relations “Have” Time? A Critical-Realist Relational Perspective on Social Time

    Open Access•Michalis Christodoulou•ARTICLE•Stan Rzeczy•2025

  • Grounded theory as a framework for explanatory sequential mixed-method design, an example from educational research

    Open Access•Michalis Christodoulou•ARTICLE•Quality & Quantity•2025

In this article we provide a methodological argument for conducting mixed-methods (MM) research by using Grounded Theory (GT) methodology. The contribution to the mixed method research is twofold. First, in contrast to the standard approaches to the sequential explanatory designs in which the qual strand comes after the quant, we argue that in a MM-GT design the qual strand precedes because GT methodology aims at explaining the participants’ main…

  • Researching the self in critical realist biographical research

    Michalis Christodoulou•ARTICLE•Journal of Critical Realism•2025•References: 9

  • The four C’s model of thematic analysis. A critical realist perspective

    Michalis Christodoulou•ARTICLE•Journal of Critical Realism•2024

This article provides a critical realist (CR) alternative to the standard approaches to Thematic Analysis (TA) in qualitative research, namely the Braun-Clarke approach (reflexivity while coding themes), the Attride-Sterling approach (clustering basic, global and organizing themes), and Boyatzis' approach (clarifying criteria for assessing the absence/presence of themes in the raw material). In the CR traditions, the experiential themes /inferent…

  • Georg Simmel and the ontology of relational emergence

    Open Access•Michalis Christodoulou•ARTICLE•Journal for the Theory of Social…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 22

In this article we argue that Simmel's social theory has laid the groundwork for the ontology of relational emergence as propounded by critical realism. Although it has been acknowledged by many a scholar that “relationality” as such constitutes the ontological foundation of Simmel's philosophy, a disagreement regarding the nature of this relationality permeates Simmel literature. The main idea of our argument is that Simmel's approach to “relati…

  • Emancipation as subjectification. A critical realist reading of Biesta’s educational philosophy

    Michalis Christodoulou•ARTICLE•Journal of Critical Realism•2020

‘Subjectification', the cornerstone concept of Biesta's philosophy of education, refers to how autonomy should be realized in educational settings and to the fact that explanation is irrelevant to emancipation. In this article a critical realist reading is provided of how Biesta links narrative learning to emancipation and of the shortcomings that spring from this connection. The central thesis of my argument is that truth and values should take …

  • Social Causation and Biographical Research

Giorgos Tsiolis, Michalis Christodoulou•BOOK•Social Causation and Biographical…•2020

This book extends debates in the field of biographical research, arguing that causal explanations are not at odds with biographical research and that biographical research is in fact a valuable tool for explaining why things in social and personal lives are one way and not another. Bringing reconstructive biographical research into dialogue with critical realism, it explains how and why relational social ontology can become a unique theoretical g…

  • The life–course formation of teachers’ profession. How emotions affect VET teachers’ social identity

Open Access•Michalis Christodoulou, Christina Bousia et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Sociología de la…•2018

One of the less developed issues in the sociology of education concerns how the social formation of emotions affects teachers’ collective identities. In this article we outline the ingredients of a conceptual scheme explaining the emotional dynamics which form teachers’ social identities through a life-course perspective. In particular, we show how educational and job experiences related to teachers’ social trajectories create emotional dynamics …
