  • The Power of Meaning

    Open Access•Carolin S Keutzer•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•1984•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The startling and paradoxical discoveries in quantum mechanics and the Jungian concepts of acausality and synchronicity are described and examined in terms of their parallels and their implication for our personal lives, particularly as they impart meaning to our existence. Included in the discussion are the bases for Einstein's objections to quantum mechanics, the importance of Bell's theorem as the bridge between subatomic and psychic events, t…

  • Physics and Consciousness

    Open Access•Carolin S Keutzer•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•1982•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Presented herein is the proposition that humans can, under certain conditions, attain a higher awareness, a "cosmic" or "unitive" consciousness in which they have immediate knowledge of a reality underlying the phenomenal world. Resistances to this belief are cited, as are their contemporary counterforces. New models of reality urged by relativity theory, quantum mechanics and Bell's theorem are invoked as parallels, metaphors, and potential sour…

  • A note on assessing the effects of therapy in a family-counseling agency

    Open Access•Carolin S Keutzer•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•1979•References: 3

As a part of an ongoing research project, three quick, simple, and reliable instruments were used to measure the degree and type of psychological distress that clients at a nonprofit counseling agency experienced prior and subsequent to receiving therapy. Although not free from methodological difficulties (most notably the number of non-respondents at follow-up), this study showed a statistically significant (p < .001) positive change in all the …

  • Emotional” Role-Playing and Changes in Smoking Attitudes and Behavior

    Open Access•Edward Lichtenstein, Carolin S Keutzer et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

The effectiveness of an “emotional” role-playing procedure for modifying smoking attitudes and behavior (Janis & Mann, 1965) was evaluated in three studies using 54 female smokers. Each experimental S role-played a patient who received information that she had lung cancer, would have to undergo an immediate operation, and would have to stop smoking; control Ss listened to a taped role-playing session. While experimental and control groups did not…

  • A Measure of Cognitive Dissonance as a Predictor of Smoking Treatment Outcome

    Open Access•Carolin S Keutzer•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

In an effort to determine which pre-treatment variables could serve as predictors of success in a smoking-treatment program, 213 adult volunteer smokers were assessed for a wide range of factors. A specially devised instrument, a measure of Effective Cognitive Dissonance, proved to be the variable most closely associated with end-of-treatment smoking rates

  • Further Normative and Correlational Data on the Internal-External (I-E) Control of Reinforcement Scale

    Open Access•Edward Lichtenstein, Carolin S Keutzer•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1967

Rotter's measure of Internal-External control (I-E) was administered to a large group of adult Ss in the course of a smoking control research program. The obtained scores were lower than reported norms for college students. While I-E was unrelated to years of education, there was a small ( r = −.14) but significant tendency for older Ss to be more internally oriented. Although I-E was not related to outcome of smoking treatment, relationships wit…
