Ali Jihad Racy, Scott Marcus et al.•CHAPTER•Performing EthnomusicologyTeaching…•2004

This chapter opens with a discussion of dual discourse in Arab music pedagogy in an interview with Ali Jihad Racy. It also presents the early background and career trajectory of Ali Jihad Racy's versatility as a performer-researcher which was found highly desirable when he joined UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles). The biraha music culture of northern India has a unique makeup and history which allows for detailed study of changes in song structure over the last 100 years. Indeed, many have thought that historical studies of indivi…

  • Recycling Indian Film-Songs

    Scott Marcu, Scott Marcus•ARTICLE•Asian Music•1992•Cited by: 3

In a large number of the folk music traditions across northern India, there is no melodic composition. Musicians who perform the music do not make up new melodies; similarly, composers who create new songs do not compose new melodies. In short, in many genres of North Indian folk music, no one is creating new melodies. That is not to say there there are no new songs. In fact, for many of these same genres, especially entertainment genres, there i…

The presence of lead in labels painted on soft plastic bread packaging was evaluated. Lead was detected on the outside of 17 of 18 soft plastic bread bags that were analyzed, with an average of 26 +/- 6 mg per bag with lead. Of 106 families questioned, 16 percent of respondents reported turning the bags inside out before reusing for food storage, thus putting food in contact with the lead paint. We estimate that a weak acid, such as vinegar, coul…
