  • Metric Freedoms in Brahms's Songs

    Paul Berry•CHAPTER•The Oxford handbook of…•2012

This article focuses on Riemann's thoughts on the temporal features of music, found in his article “Metric Freedoms in Brahms's Songs”. Riemann's essay is notable, first, because it presents an almost contemporary account of Brahms's music. Second, it presents what is for Riemann a rare analytical account involving vocal music—a repertoire Riemann generally considers as inferior to absolute music. And third, its dissimilarity to Riemann's more sy…

  • Down's syndrome temperament and maternal response to descriptions of child behavior

    Pat Gunn, Paul Berry•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1985•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The mothers of 23 Down's syndrome children were asked to complete the Behavioral Style Questionnaire (BSQ) concerning the temperament characteristics of their child. They were also interviewed with the Implicit Parental Learning Theory (IPLET) Scale, which asked how they would handle certain specified child behaviors. Mothers of children with temperament rated as easy responded to the IPLET situations with more direct teaching responses and with …

  • Vocalization and looking behaviour of Down's syndrome infants

Open Access•Pat Gunn, Paul Berry et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1979

effect of contingent and non‐contingent vocal stimulation on vocalization and looking behaviour was investigated for 10 Down's syndrome infants. There were two experimental sessions consisting of four stages, namely 1 min base‐line, 1 min experimental condition, a further 1 min base‐line and a final 2 min experimental condition. Maternal vocal stimulation was contingent upon infant vocalization for experimental conditions of one session and was p…

  • Elicited Imitation and Production of Language By Severely Subnormal Children

    Open Access•Paul Berry, Joanne Taylor•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1976•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The relationship between elicited imitation and production of language is confusing in the available psycholinguistic literature. The research reported in this paper attempts to clarify this relationship. Severely mentally handicapped children (mean chronological age, 137.12 months, mean vocabulary age, 43.47 months) were involved in a series of studies in which they were asked (i) to imitate a wide range of linguistic stimuli, including single w…

  • Imitation and Comprehension of Language in Severe Subnormality

    Open Access•Paul Berry, Tom Foxen•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1975•Cited by: 4•References: 9

The ability of severely retarded children (mean CA 172.6 months, s.d. 11.0; mean Vocabulary Age on the English Picture Vocabulary Test 65.8 months, s.d. 2.95) to both imitate and comprehend language (the latter in the picture-choice situation) was investigated. In addition latencies to response in a picture-choice comprehension situation were analysed. The independent linguistic variable for all tasks was syntactic complexity. The types of error …
