Social judgement of defensive and secure social identities among advantaged and disadvantaged groups
This research integrates social judgement and social identity theories to examine evaluations of defensive (narcissistic) and secure social identity (vs. lack of identification) expressed by targets with varying group statuses (advantaged vs. disadvantaged). Across three studies (total N = 2,915), we manipulated target group status and forms of identity. In socioeconomic groups (Study 1), an advantaged target with a defensive identity was deemed …
The verbal instruction in favour of action effects can influence the congruity effect of grasping behaviours
The Simon effect under reversed visual feedback
Promoting a hand sanitizer by persuasive messages
Anticipating the magnitude of response outcomes can induce a potentiation effect for manipulable objects
The visual size of graspable objects is needed to induce the potentiation of grasping behaviors even with verbal stimuli
On the relationship between valence and arousal in samples across the globe
Affect is involved in many psychological phenomena, but a descriptive structure, long sought, has been elusive. Valence and arousal are fundamental, and a key question-the focus of the present study-is the relationship between them. Valence is sometimes thought to be independent of arousal, but, in some studies (representing too few societies in the world) arousal was found to vary with valence. One common finding is that arousal is lowest at neu…
Emotions and language about motion
Motor influences on judgment
Performing motor behaviours (arm flexion vs. extension) that correspond also to lateralized peripheral activations (left vs. right side) of the motivational systems of approach versus avoidance have been previously shown to impact cognitive performance and judgment. Three experiments are reported that examined the combined effect of these variables, as a kind of motor integration, on the implementation of information integration rules in various …
A cross‐cultural investigation into a reconceptualization of ethnocentrism
This investigation tests a reconceptualization of ethnocentrism based primarily on Sumner's definitions. Ethnocentrism is reconceptualized as ethnic group self‐centeredness, with four intergroup expressions of ingroup preference, superiority, purity, and exploitativeness, and two intragroup expressions of group cohesion and devotion. The reconceptualization was supported in Study 1 among 350 New Zealand participants and in Study 2 among 212 US, 2…
Behavioral Responses to Threatened Ethnic Identity in a Sports Setting
Boxing competitions with two rounds between French and Arab students (N = 58) were used to investigate intergroup relations and social identity. Behavioral measures were observed in two rounds of the competition to assess possible changes depending on threat conditions and strength of ethnic identification. Analyses showed that behavioral effort in round 2 was not influenced by the degree of ethnic identification or threat conditions. However, be…
Authoritarianism, social dominance orientation and prejudice
The Influence of Unilateral and Bilateral Arm Flexion Versus Extension on Judgments
Two experiments were conducted to examine how activation of the motivational systems of approach and withdrawal (arm flexion vs. extension) through 2 different bodily mechanisms (right arm vs. left arm) influenced participants' evaluations of neutral Chinese ideographs. Study 1 found that unilateral flexion on the right side and unilateral extension on the left side led to more positive evaluations than unilateral flexion on the left side and uni…
