  • Improving the design of climate insurance

Open Access•Meike Will, Annika Backes et al.•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2022

Extreme weather conditions in the face of due to climate change often disproportionately affects the weakest members of society. Agricultural insurance programs that are specifically designed specifically for smallholders in developing countries are valuable tools that can help farmers to cope with the resulting risks. A broad range of methods including household surveys, experimental games, and agent-based models have been used to assess and imp…

  • Effects of input vouchers and rainfall insurance on agricultural production and household welfare

    Open Access•Ho Lun Wong, Xiangdong Wei et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

  • Exploiting the Convergence of Evidence in Satellite Data for Advanced Weather Index Insurance Design

Open Access•Markus Enenkel, Daniel E Osgood et al.•ARTICLE•Weather, Climate, and Society•2019

The goal of drought-related weather index insurance (WII) is to protect smallholder farmers against the risk of weather shocks and to increase their agricultural productivity. Estimates of precipitation and vegetation greenness are the two dominant satellite datasets. However, ignoring additional moisture- and energy-related processes that influence the response of vegetation to rainfall leads to an incomplete representation of the hydrologic cyc…

  • Evidence of Demand for Index Insurance

Michael Norton, Daniel E Osgood et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2014

We present results of experimental games with smallholder farmers in Tigray, Ethiopia, in 2010, in which participants in the games allocated money across risk management options. One of the options was index insurance that was the same as commercial products sold locally. Participants exhibited clear preferences for insurance contracts with higher frequency payouts and for insurance over other risk management options, including high interest savi…

  • Long-term Impacts of Droughts on Labour Markets in Developing Countries

Valerie Mueller, Valerie A Mueller et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2009

Climate shocks have well-documented impacts on the short-term welfare of rural households in developing countries. We investigate the impact of droughts on Brazilian labour markets. We find long-term rural wage losses beyond the immediate impact of the drought, with affected workers taking five years to catch up with their peers. Findings are robust to model specification. The severity of the losses varies with the dependence on agricultural inco…
