Using Intersectionality to Reimagine Title IX Adjudication Policy
Using critical discourse analysis, this article reveals how power is inherent in and maintained through Title IX campus-based adjudication processes. We interrogate the role of identity and power in Title IX adjudication processes through an intersectional analytic framework. We challenge the reliance on fairness and neutrality, which leads institutions to a one-size-fits-all approach to implementing this policy. We also demonstrate how parallels…
The dissertation process as one of healing and unmasking for sexual assault survivors
Limited research exists around the complexities of scholars who identify as survivors and subsequently engage in research about sexual violence and the relationship between their own scholarship and survivor identities. As scholars of color and survivors, who work in higher education, we navigate our own trauma and the trauma of others on a regular basis. This study was a transformative opportunity to explore our own experiences with writing diss…
Faculty Experiences Partnering with Student Affairs Practitioners to Address Campus Sexual Violence
Faculty members’ experiences in partnering with student affairs practitioners to address campus sexual violence were investigated in this study. How Neoliberalism Shapes the Role and Responsibility of Faculty Members for Eliminating Sexual Violence
Little is known about the ways in which faculty members understand their role and responsibility in addressing sexual violence and how they engage in sexual violence education efforts. This qualitative study of 10 faculty members gives insight into how faculty members engage in efforts to address sexual violence. Their experiences demonstrate how neoliberalism shapes their ability to truly work toward eliminating sexual violence from campuses. Fi…
High-impact practices and student–faculty interactions for gender-variant students
The vast amount of research on student success and engagement in college focuses on a narrative for majority student populations that does not account for unique experiences across social identities. This paper examines the experiences of gender variant students (i.e., students who do not identify as either cisgender men or women) regarding engagement in high-impact practices and student-faculty interactions using a large-scale, multi-institution…
