  • How Racial Battle Fatigue Impacts Black Women Graduate Students

Open Access•K J Mills, Stephen John Quaye et al.•ARTICLE•Equity & Excellence in Education•2025

Higher education scholarship demonstrates the regularity and magnitude in which Black populations experience racial battle fatigue (RBF), or the mounting stress associated with enduring everyday racism. Regardless of their identities or roles on campus, Black students, faculty/staff, and administrators uniformly report adverse psychological, physiological, and behavioral stress responses of RBF. For Black women graduate students, who occupy limin…

    Open Access•Hannah L Reyes, K J Mills et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2024

Guided by Chicana and Black feminist interpretive phenomenological analysis, we identified four clusters which detailed perceived paternal influences in the lives of these c…

Open Access•Monica Quezada Barrera, Hannah L Reyes et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2024

Through a Chicana/Latina Feminist lens centering ways of knowing, we highlight how Latina abuelas and mothers often serve as unofficial teachers in their grand/daughter’s educational trajectories. Specifically, through dichos and consejos, these Latina maternal figures impart the knowledge necessary to navigate incongruent educational spaces and persist

  • How Sorority and Fraternity Life Professionals Validate Culturally Based Sororities and Fraternities

Antonio Duran, Crystal E Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Student Affairs…•2024

Scholars have documented the positive outcomes that affiliation with sorority and fraternity life (SFL) organizations affords students; yet, few studies have explored how SFL professionals enable these benefits. Using validation theory as a framework, this narrative study examined how SFL practitioners affirm members of culturally based sororities and fraternities. Findings illustrated how SFL professionals interpersonally validated these student…

  • A LatCrit Analysis of Latina Collegians’ Recollections of Racism in Educational Spaces

    Open Access•Hannah L Reyes, Antonio Duran•ARTICLE•Journal of Latinos and Education•2024•References: 9

Often noted in educational scholarship is Latinx/a/o students' experiences of racism that they encounter from peers, faculty, and staff within college contexts. Less discussed, however, are the persistent long-term effects of everyday, racist messages on Latinx/a/o students they received in PreK–12 years and how these forms of marginalization in turn affect how they navigate through college. Using a narrative methodological approach and Latino cr…

Latina mothers frequently impart guidance and lessons on their children as they traverse educational spaces.Drawing from their own lived experiences and epistemologies, Latina mothers often provide advice and support necessary for their children to persist academically and authentically. To extend the existing literature, our narrative study centering twelve Latina collegians highlighted the enduring cognitive impacts of their mothers' teachings t…

  • What sorority and fraternity life (SFL) professionals learn about navigating their positionalities when advising and advocating for culturally based SFL organizations

Hannah L Reyes, Antonio Duran et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Diversity in Higher…•2022•References: 3

Despite the growing literature on culturally based sororities and fraternities, little research has examined how practitioners on college campuses support these organizations. This constructivist narrative study addressed this gap by centering the stories of fifteen sorority and fraternity life professionals who advised culturally based sororities and fraternities. In particular, this research project examined how participants reflected on their …

  • A Narrative Study Examining Latina Collegians’ Maternal Relationships and Their Influence on Educational Trajectories

    Open Access•Hannah L Reyes, Antonio Duran•ARTICLE•Journal of Latinos and Education•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 11

Scholarship on Latinx communities has consistently underscored the role that families play in college students’ educational aspirations and success. Forms of familial empowerment are particularly beneficial as Latinx college students encounter environments and individuals that do not account for their cultural knowledges. A subset of this literature has focused on the gendered dynamics that exist as Latina daughters navigate postsecondary educati…

  • Critically examining the experiences of queer people of color in culturally-based sororities and fraternities

Antonio Duran, Crystal E Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Diversity in Higher…•2021•Cited by: 1

Guided by Queer of Color critique as a theoretical framework, this research project investigated the experiences of Queer People of Color in culturally-based sororities and fraternities (CBSFs). Engaging in a secondary analysis of two critical narrative inquiry studies (one focused on Queer Men of Color and the other on Queer Women of Color), we examined how systems of power and oppression manifested across CBSFs. In addition, we interrogated how…
