The Numeral Confix *i- -(e)n David Mead Abstract In his 1981 paper on Austronesian numerals, Otto Dahl adduced evidence from Paiwan, Ma'anyan, and Malagasy for positing a numeral confix meaning 'so and so many days', which he reconstructed as *(ma)ka- -(a)N. In this squib, I discuss the evidence for reconstructing another numeral confix of the same meaning but having the form *i- -(e)n. As far as I know, reflexes of this other numeral confix are …

  • The Evidence for Final Consonants in Proto-Bungku-Tolaki

    David Mead•ARTICLE•Oceanic Linguistics•1996

On solid evidence, Proto-Austronesian etyma have been reconstructed with final consonants. Just as clearly, word forms in the descendent Bungku-Tolaki languages of southeastern Sulawesi lack final consonants. The question addressed in this paper is whether various final consonants were lost prior or subsequent to the Proto-Bungku-Tolaki (PBT) stage. Based primarily on certain vowel correspondences found in the present-day languages that can be ex…

David Mead, Mead David•ARTICLE•The New England Quarterly•1949

O N November 3, 1853, when Amos Bronson Alcott set out from Concord on his first journey into the great West, his enthusiasm for the new adventure was tinged with doubt at the prospects of its success. To be sure, his friend Ralph Waldo Emerson, who had already made two lecturing trips beyond the Alleghenies, spoke hopefully of the people in those parts. But Emerson and the other intrepid New England lecturers who had visited the Western region a…
