  • Implementing Inclusive Teaching around Sex, Sexual Reproduction, and Gender (SSRG) in Biology: A Multi-Case Investigation at Hispanic-Serving Institutions

Open Access•Antonio Duran, Yoon Ha Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Innovative Higher Education•2026

In contemporary U.S. society, the perception of the nature of science varies, ranging from the view that it is a neutral practice to one that positions science as constantly shifting and informed by oppressive dynamics. Within these differences, there are scrutinized subject matters such as those pertaining to sex, sexual reproduction, and gender (SSRG), which are commonplace in many undergraduate biology curricula. Using a multiple-site, embedde…

  • Science Educators and Researchers Must Uphold the Human Rights of Trans, Nonbinary, and Intersex Persons

Open Access•Quentin C Sedlacek, Anne Marie Casper et al.•ARTICLE•Science Education•2026

Trans, nonbinary, and intersex persons are—and have always been—an integral part of humankind. However, these communities are under attack. We live in a time of growing state repression and the normalization of political violence against trans, nonbinary, and intersex persons throughout much of the world, and we have a responsibility to understand these conditions and consider their implications for science education. In this commentary, we brief…

  • “There is a Place for Us Here”: Exploring Sex, Gender, Reproduction, Sexual Behavior, and Orientation Narratives Supporting Students With Queer Genders in Biology Courses

Open Access•Sarah L Eddy, Sam Ahler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Science…•2026

Queer undergraduates describe a climate in STEM fields and classrooms that is both hostile to and silent on queer identities, leading to experiences of social exclusion, devaluation as a scientist, and discrimination. In the few studies that have specifically focused on trans and non‐binary undergraduates (i.e., students with queer genders), these students report more hostile conditions than their cisgender peers. In biology and biology‐related m…

  • Influence of Anti-DEI Legislation on Biology Instructors’ Agency Regarding Inclusive Content

Open Access•Yoon Ha Choi, Antonio Duran et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Higher Education•2025•References: 45

  • How guest experts tell stories about environmental socio-scientific issues in an undergraduate class

Anne Marie Casper, Meena M Balgopal•ARTICLE•International Journal of Science…•2020

To broaden perspectives presented in undergraduate courses, instructors often invite guest speakers, yet there is limited research on students’ perceptions of guest speakers and the potential influence they may have on student learning. In this exploratory study, we describe how senior undergraduate students, in a natural resource management capstone course, perceived guest speakers, who were invited to lecture on environmental socio-scientific i…

  • Managing Populations, Diseases, and Landowner Perceptions of Prairie Dogs for Black-Footed Ferret Reintroduction

Anne Marie Casper, A M Aramati Casper et al.•ARTICLE•Case Studies in the Environment•2018

The black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) is one of the rarest mammal species in North America. Captive breeding has prevented extinction of this species, but successful reintroduction of ferrets into their native grassland habitat is a complex endeavor. As specialist predators, ferrets depend almost exclusively on prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) for both food and shelter, so successful black-footed ferret reintroduction hinges on maintaining large …

  • Conceptual change in natural resource management students’ ecological literacy

Anne Marie Casper, Anne Marie A Casper et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Conceptual change in undergraduate capstone courses provides unique opportunities to examine how students draw from multiple courses and experiences to resolve conceptual confusion. We examined how senior-level natural resource management students revised their conceptions of ‘ecosystem’ throughout their capstone course. The concept of ecosystem is complicated by a lack of shared meaning across disciplines. Our grounded theory study analyzed stud…
