General Education Biology Lab Syllabi in the US
While syllabi and their learning outcome statements may not reflect all classroom practices, the document is often the first information students receive upon starting a course, and it formally communicates what students are meant to take away from the learning experience. This paper presents a quantitative content document analysis of the explicit outcomes presented in general education (non-majors) biology lab syllabi. Using a stratified random…
Equitable Compensation to Attract and Retain Qualified Teachers in High-Need Alaska Public Schools
Measuring the appropriate level of teacher compensation for different working conditions requires overcoming a number of empirical challenges, including defining and measuring differences in qualifications, effects of non-wage compensation, financial constraints, and lack of market clearing. We address those challenges in a study of teacher compensation in Alaska’s 462 public schools in 53 districts. Each of our three linked empirical specificati…
Identifying and interpreting gendered violence
We present an audience reception study of participant reactions to gender‐based violence in Issa López' 2008 film, Casi Divas , chosen for its nuanced depiction of women grappling with several violences. Over three focus groups with 15 adult participants, we used Galtung's conflict theory to explore what participants identified as violence, and how victims should respond to violence in various forms. We find that participants have a narrow defini…
The impact of disrupted in-person student teaching on preservice teachers’ perceptions of preparedness
This mixed-methods analysis uses exit surveys from 17 teacher education programs in four US states to compare self-ratings of preparedness between two cohorts of preservice teachers: 2019 graduates who had “normal” student teaching experiences (n = 1264) and 2020 graduates (n = 1280), for whom in-person student teaching was shortened by 6–10 weeks during the spring 2020 COVID-19 school closures. Despite truncated student teaching experiences, the…
Spillover Effects
We explore the restructuring of a 2-semester introductory biology course into a 1-semester intensive by comparing 1,457 and 908 students who took the first and second courses in the sequence, respectively, to 1,231 who took the intensive. We report outcomes before and after the restructure, including outcomes in the focal course, in concurrently enrolled courses, in subsequent biology courses, and in university retention. Overall, students in int…
Mediating Students’ Fixation with Grades in an Inquiry-Based Undergraduate Biology Course
The paper analyzes focus group data to explore student perceptions of an inquiry-based undergraduate biology course. Though the course was designed to mimic the scientific process by incorporating uncertainty, peer review, and self-reflection, students came to class focused on getting As and with a developed schema for didactic instruction and passive learning. They perceived the autonomy and self-directedness of the learning experience as a thre…
Profiles of an Acquisition Generation
Though definitions vary, the literature on heritage speakers of Spanish identifies two primary attributes: a linguistic and cultural connection to the language. This article profiles four Anglo college students who grew up in bilingual or Spanish-dominant communities in the Southwest who self-identified as Spanish heritage speakers, citing linguistic and cultural connections developed at home and in their communities. It compares their experience…
Spanish Is Foreign
This article presents a case study of the perceptions of Spanish heritage speakers enrolled in introductory-level Spanish foreign language courses. Despite their own identities that were linked to the United States and Spanish of the Borderlands, the participants felt that the curriculum acknowledged the Spanish of Spain and foreign countries but generally failed to address or legitimate U.S. Spanish. Their interpretations of curricular messages …
Toward a model of purposeful participant inclusion
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore purposive approaches to participant selection and to consider how deselecting qualified participants from research studies, particularly in studies of identity, may cause psychological harm. Design/methodology/approach – Within a framework of social identity theory, the paper reviews current approaches to participant selection in the purposive paradigm and uses examples from a case study to illust…
