The 'Token' Minority: An Attitudinal Comparison of Black, Oriental and Anglo Rural Youth Utilizing a Matched-Set Analysis
Attitudes of 'token' numbers of black and Oriental youths embedded in a large sample survey of Wyoming junior and senior high school students are compared to those of Anglo youth utilizing an approach developed by Mantel and Haenszel (1959) and Mantel (1963). This 'matched-set analysis' offers a method by which categorical responses of rare or small classes of respondents in large samples may be compared to those of larger respondent subgroups wh…
Drinking Behavior and its Relationship to Outdoor Recreation Participation
This study examined the relationship between drinking patterns and outdoor recreation activities, using data from a sample taken in a midwestern city. It found that alcoholic beverage consumption is compatible with the selected outdoor activities and the heaviest drinkers have the highest participation rates. It is suggested that the same background factors that influence drinking behavior also influence outdoor recreation participation. In conju…
Sex and Drinking Patterns: An Old Relationship Revisited in a New Way
This paper investigates the nature of sex differences in drinking motives and behavior within a stratified random sample from the Champaign-Urbana community (N=385). Discriminant analysis is used to pinpoint which independent drinking variables differentiated most powerfully between the sexes, as well as to measure the importance of sex differences in drinking relative to age, student status, and marital status group differences. The findings ind…

We find that the most significant factor affecting both degree and nature of interest in the history of sociology is the speciality of the sociologist himself

The Urban Context and Higher Education: A Delineation of Issues
Higher education in its urban context is more than a matter of the expansion and development of an existing system to serve the needs of large population centers. The trend that is involved needs also to be recognized as a significant departure from the past of American higher education which carries with it profound political as well as educational implications. The nineteenth century origin of most of our present campuses reflects as great a bi…
Some Neglected Aspects of Negro Class Comparisons
HE NEGRO MIDDLE CLASS has long been an analytic category used by students of race relations. However, the defining criteria used to identify this class have been varied and even loose at times. E. Franklin Frazier, the best known student of the Negro middle class, defined it very broadly. When he spoke of the occupational base of the black bourgeoisie, he discussed a range from physicians and lawyers, through officials and clerks, down to and inc…
