Perceptions and Experiences of Antipsychotic Use and Discontinuation Among Young Adults Who Completed a First-Episode Psychosis Program
Antipsychotic medications (APMs) are one of the frontline treatments in First Episode Psychosis (FEP) programs. However, in recent years, debates have emerged regarding the risk-benefit ratio of APMs, leading to more open and frequent discussions about discontinuation. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of APM use and decision-making among young adults with FEP participating in NAVIGATE, an FEP program. Semi-structured…
Trends, challenges, and priorities for shared decision making in mental health

AIMS: (1) Provide the first systematic analysis of global development trends and challenges…
Virtual Community Engagement Studio (V-CES)
Active engagement of community stakeholders is increasingly encouraged in behavioral health research, often described as a co-production approach. Community stakeholders (e.g., patients, providers, policy makers, advocates) play a leading role together with research investigators in conducting the various phases of research, including conceptualization, design, implementation, and the interpretation and dissemination of findings. Shared Decision Making in Primary Care Based Depression Treatment
Objectives: Although depression is a significant public health issue, many individuals experiencing depressive symptoms are not effectively linked to treatment by their primary care provider, with underserved populations have disproportionately lower rates of engagement in depression care. Shared decision making (SDM) is an evidence-based health communication framework that can improve collaboration and optimize treatment for patients, but there …
Barriers and Enablers to Shared Decision Making in Psychiatric Medication Management
Shared decisionmaking (SDM) is a recommended health communication approach in mental health settings. Yet, implementation of SDM in psychiatric consultations discussing medication management is challenging. Insufficient attention has been given to examine the views of both clinicians and service users together about the experiences of SDM in psychiatric medication management. The purpose of this paper is to examine the views of service users, com…

Patient-centered psychiatric care for youth in foster care
Youth in the U.S. foster care system are prescribed risky psychotropic medications at high rates. In response, state child welfare agencies have developed policies, yet there is little research to inform patient-centered care (PCC) approaches. To fill this gap, we aimed to identify (1) the perspectives of youth in or formerly in foster care and their caregivers and providers regarding how psychiatric care aligns or does not align with PCC, and (2…
