  • A Hermeneutics of Love with Brent Dean Robbins

    Open Access•Robert Garfield McInerney•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2026•References: 15

This article offers a personal narrative and theoretical reflection on my relationship with Brent Dean Robbins as a hermeneutics of love. A hermeneutics of love is thus refigured as an interpersonal dynamic in addition to an epistemology. With reflection on this narrative and theory, it is shown that in our conversations, the synergistic intertwining of hermeneutics, love, and ethics brought forth divining moments as understanding, loveliness, an…

  • The Mobile Thriving Respite With and for the Street Community

Open Access•Robert Garfield McInerney, Kelsey Long et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 16

We report on our work with the street community of Pittsburgh, specifically, a community-based action initiative we call the Mobile Thriving Respite (Institutional Review Board approval was obtained from our university). For 5 years, student advocate ethnographers from Point Park University have gathered data (e.g., long- and short-term interviews, participant-observations generating fieldnotes). The data revealed and supported the need for thriv…

  • Student Activism in the Neoliberal University

Open Access•Justin M Karter, Brent Dean Robbins et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 36

Student activism is a highly underresearched topic in psychology despite the field’s commitment to studying person–environment interactions and advancing social justice aims. Furthermore, less is known about the ways in which student activists navigate the neoliberal or “corporatized” university in the United States. This research study utilizes a hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative method in order to attempt to describe the experience of be…

  • A Hermeneutics of Love for Community-Based, Participatory Action Research

    Open Access•Robert Garfield McInerney•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 28

This article presents a broad humanistic-existential framework in support of community-orientated, participatory action research. Beginning with Pink Floyd’s The Wall as a pedagogic illustration of the aporia of community, three dispositions are offered for the community researcher: communitas, allopathy, and munificence. Each disposition is shown to be supported by particular shared burdens (hospitality, alterity, finitude, and supplementarity) …

  • Becoming “Threshold Researchers” in the Community

    Open Access•Rachael Goss, Robert Garfield McInerney•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 37

This article provides a research methodology based in Queer Theory in order to support ethical interpretation within participatory, action, and community-based research. The work defines and explicates a potential relationship between a queering process as a threshold practice and a hermeneutics of love as a research stance. Additionally, this work offers qualitative, phenomenological narrative accounts of queer and threshold experiences that sup…

  • Toward a method of neurophenomenological assessment and intervention

Robert Garfield McInerney, Monica M Walker•ARTICLE•The Humanistic Psychologist•2002

People who have sustained brain injury are administered standardized neuropsychological tests designed to evaluate brain dysfunction. Phenomenology is a descriptive method that seeks to explicate people's lived experience and hence goes beyond the realm of mere brain function. Our method of neurophenomenological assessment mitigates the dangers of reducing people to brain dysfunction, and facilitates collaborative assessment of people who have br…
