  • Development and initial psychometric evaluation of an adapted Moral Injury Events Scale for Law Enforcement (Mies-LE)

Gabrielle O’Keefe, Rachel Cusatis et al.•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2026

Moral injury (MI) occurs in a variety of serving occupations including among law enforcement professionals (LEP). MI was originally described among military veterans as distress arising from a violation of one’s morals and values. Historically, MI measurement was not informed by the perspectives of those who experience it, and validation of measures was limited to military or veteran populations. Informed by a grounded theory of MI among LEP, we …

  • Moral injury, posttraumatic stress, and resilience among law enforcement professionals in Wisconsin

Gabrielle O’Keefe, Rachel Cusatis et al.•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2026

There is growing consensus that law enforcement professionals (LEP) experience mental health disparities compared to general population, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Moral injury (MI), distress from an acute or chronic violation of one’s morals, is a correlate of PTSD in military populations and may be related to PTSD in LEP. We deployed a cross-sectional survey to a diverse sample (N = 445) to examine this potential relations…

  • Building better outcomes

Open Access•Taylor J Jaraczewski, Tien Vo et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Surgical outcomes in low- and middle-income countries are significantly worse than in their high-income country counter parts. Registries are an important tool in quality improvement as they facilitate collection and analysis of comprehensive patient data to be used for benchmarking outcomes. Despite the known efficacy of such registries, they are sparse in low- and middle-income countries. Ethiopia, however has had success implementing periopera…

  • The Epidemiology of Psychedelic Use Among United States Military Veterans

    Open Access•A K Davis, Mark J Bates et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2024

We sought to identify patterns of psychedelic use among United States military veterans, compare demographic variables and perspectives of those who did and did not report use, and characterize benefits and adverse outcomes associated with use. Respondents ( N = 426) were recruited to complete an online cross-sectional survey. Approximately one-half (51%) reported using psychedelics. Most did so for healing/treatment (70%) and/or spiritual purpos…

  • Foreword to the Second Volume of the Special Issue on Veteran Community Engagement

Open Access•Zeno Franco, Katinka Hooyer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2023•References: 12

Veteran community engagement is an evolving discipline informed by traditional community-based participatory research, veteran studies, and veterans themselves. This Special Issue suggests that research collaborations including military veterans, soldiers, and their families as co-researchers is a critical next step toward a design thinking perspective in social and healthcare systems for this population. This Special Issue was conceptualized thr…

  • Medical School Civic Engagement During Covid-19

    Open Access•Zeno Franco, Christopher S Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2023•References: 50

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) serves the Milwaukee metro area, one of the most diverse and segregated urban areas in the United States. In the acute crisis phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, MCW’s Civic and Community Engagement (C/CE) efforts were leveraged to address community concerns around four key initiatives: (a) availability of personal protective equipment in community; (b) food and housing issues for homeless individuals; (c) the n…

  • Engaging veteran stakeholders to identify patient‐centred research priorities for optimizing implementation of lung cancer screening

Open Access•Alice Yan, Katinka Hooyer et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2022

BACKGROUND: Patient engagement in research agenda setting is increasingly being seen as a strategy to improve the responsiveness of healthcare to patient priorities. Implementation of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening for lung cancer is suboptimal, suggesting that research is needed. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe an approach by which a Veteran patient group worked with other stakeholders to develop a research agenda for LDC…

  • An Educational Theater- Based Activity to Challenge Cultural Stereotypes about Veterans’ and their Lived Experiences

Open Access•Katinka Hooyer, Leslie Ruffalo•ARTICLE•Journal of Veterans Studies•2021

The media stereotypes military veterans as damaged beings or indestructible heroes, often forming implicit and explicit biases that impact medical and health providers’ capability to connect emotionally with veterans. This educational tool uses interactive theater to challenge veteran stigma, enhance empathy, and increase learners’ ability to talk to veterans about their service. This 90-minute session includes an interactive theater performance …

  • Altered States of Combat

Open Access•Katinka Hooyer, Kalman Applbaum et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 22

For veterans with moral conflicts brought on by war work, evidence-based approaches designed for posttraumatic stress disorder tend not to attend to resulting spiritual and ethical forms of suffering. These “treatment-resistant” veterans are at high risk for self-harm. While new medical treatments are being developed, it is also clear that veterans themselves are experimenting in collective, ritualistic, and community-based ceremonial uses of psy…
